1Password begins adding support for passkeys on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17

With iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 officially out, 1Password has begun implementing passkey support to its iOS app.

Passkey is a recently developed technology by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with major companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. Instead of traditional passwords, it enables users to log in using secure methods like facial recognition or biometrics, eliminating the need to create and type a passcode.

The technology was first introduced in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, and users have been able to create and save passkeys using Safari and iCloud Keychain. With iOS 17, this functionality will be extended to third-party apps. The well-known password manager, 1Password, is one of the first to announce support for passkeys in its iOS app.

The new functionality in 1Passwords offers to ability to manage and use passkeys on mobile apps and browser extensions, securely share passkeys, and customize business policies. 1Password has also stated that users will soon be able to unlock their password vaults using only a passkey.

1Password is available for free on the App Store, although some features require a paid subscription.

If you’ve tried the new 1Password passkey feature under iOS 17 or iPadOS 17, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

AgileBits announces upcoming passkeys feature support for 1Password

Software developer AgileBits has announced full support for the upcoming passkey protocol, the passwordless login credential that Apple has begun transitioning to. The company has announced its efforts to incorporate this feature into 1Password for iOS.

Over in its blog, AgileBits explained that once a new passkey key been created on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you’ll be able to choose where to store it. The passkey can either be synced between devices, locked to a specific device, or only support syncing within a specific ecosystem. 1Password, in turn, will let you use your passkeys on any device and any major browser.

Passkeys can then be shared with anyone by placing them in a shared vault or placed in item sharing for short-term access.

In the current 1Password beta apps, the Watchtower feature will notify you when one of your existing accounts can be secured with a passkey. An on-screen prompt will explain where your new passkey will be stored. If you already have an account with the website, you’ll see an option to update your current credential with the new passkey or save it as a new one.

Changes to passkey can also be synced across devices and are available in 1Password for Mac, iOS, Windows, Android, and Linux.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • 1Password to bring Masked Email feature to its software, helping to prevent phishing attempts by external parties

1Password to bring Masked Email feature to its software, helping to prevent phishing attempts by external parties

    This is kind of nifty.

Software maker 1Password, which since 2019 has used the Sign in with Apple feature to allow iPhone and Mac users to protect their privacy by allowing them to generate random email addresses when they need to access a new website, service or app, has announced that it will be bringing a similar feature to its own software.

The company has partnered with email host Fastmail to introduce a feature called Masked Email. Like its Apple counterpart, the tool allows you to create unique email addresses for your logins. Users can create the aliases directly within the 1Password app, allowing the tool to be accessed on all platforms where the password manager is available.

“Reliance on technology has grown substantially, especially over the last year, and so has our susceptibility to data breaches and spam,” said 1Password CEO Jeff Shiner. “For any streaming services, newsletters, or other online accounts that people have signed up for, Masked Email makes it possible for them to use email aliases to help keep their online identities private on any platform, but still manage them from a primary email inbox. And if they start receiving unwanted emails, it’s also a clear way for people to identify which of those services have shared, leaked or sold their email address.”

The new feature could prove vital in helping to safeguard users’ online privacy. In many cases, privacy breaches begin with phishing emails. As such, a user is far less likely to click on a suspicious link or inadvertently share your personal information if you don’t get one of those messages in the first place.
