Apple publishes change list detailing recent AirTag firmware updates

Following up on two AirTag firmware updates since November, a new AirTag support article ha been published that allows users to see what’s changed.

Apple updated the AirTag on November 10 to version 2.0.24. The update, detailed by Apple, enables Precision Finding to help users locate an unknown AirTag following them. The AirTag also will emit a noise.

The feature is part of Apple’s commitment to prevent people from using an AirTag to stalk others.

Apple also released version 2.0.36 of its AirTag firmware on December 12. The update addressed a bug where the accelerometer was not activating in certain scenarios.

While users typically have ways to update devices’ firmware manually, there is no such option for AirTag. Instead, users have to wait for it to occur on its own.

The AirTag’s firmware version can be checked by using the Find My app on your phone. Once in Find My, tap the relevant AirTag, then tap the battery icon for the AirTag — this will display the serial number and the firmware version.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

Apple rolls out updated AirTag firmware ahead of anticipated iOS 16.2 update

Apple has begun rolling out an updated firmware update for its AirTag item tracker. The update arrives ahead of the company’s anticipated iOS 16.2 update, which is expected to be released to the public in the near future.

The update brings the firmware to version 2.0.36 and build number 2A36. Prior to today, the most recent version of AirTag firmware was version 2.0.24 and featured build number 2A24e. It’s presently unknown what changes with the update, as Apple has yet to share update notes for today’s firmware.

The previous AirTag firmware was released on November 10, but it’s unknown as to know exactly what has changed with version 2.0.24. Earlier this year, Apple updated the AirTag firmware to tune the unwanted tracking sound to let people locate an unknown AirTag more easily.

Users can check their AirTag firmware version by opening the “Find My” application on their iPhone, then choosing the “Items” tab in the bottom navigation bar, then choose your AirTag from the list of items and tap on the name of your AirTag. Doing this should reveal the serial number and firmware version of your AirTag.

There’s no way to force an AirTag to update, and users will have to make sure their AirTag is in range of their iPhone, whereupon it should automatically update after some time. It’s worth noting that AirTag updates are rolled out in phases, so you may not get them right away.

If you note anything different after updating the item tracker, please let us know down in the comments section.
