Leaked documents used by wireless carriers point to September 9 for Apple’s iPhone 17 launch event

The rumors are beginning to trickle in, and a new report from the internal documents used by wireless carriers seems to indicated that Tuesday, September 9, will be the most likely date for Apple’s iPhone 17 event.

Prior to this, based on the patterns seen between 2021 and 2024, tech insiders narrowed the release down to the week of September 7, with Tuesday, September 9, being the most likely day. Historically, Apple has favored Tuesdays for iPhone launches, but last year opted for Monday—presumably to avoid the U.S. Presidential Debate on Tuesday.

Per documents used by wireless carriers, this date seems likely. German site iPhone-Ticker says it got sight of internal documents from at least one local carrier, giving the launch date as September 9.

The following are the three dates that could be the most important surrounding the iPhone 17 launch:

iPhone 17 keynote: Tue 9 September

    Pre-orders open: Fri 12 September

First orders ship and retail sale begins: Fri 19 September

  • Rumor: Next-gen Apple TV to gain faster Wi-Fi, updated processor, other new features

Rumor: Next-gen Apple TV to gain faster Wi-Fi, updated processor, other new features

Apple is expected to release an updated Apple TV unit this year, and the rumor mill has compiled the following expecations for the new device:

    Faster Wi-Fi Support:

Per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the updated Apple TV will feature Apple’s own combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. Bloomberg noted that the chip will support Wi-Fi 6E, which would be an upgrade over the current Apple TV’s standard Wi-Fi 6 support. Wi-Fi 6E extends the capabilities of Wi-Fi 6 to the 6 GHz band with a compatible router. This can contribute to faster Wi-Fi speeds and lower latency compared to Wi-Fi 6. It’s also thought that the chip might even support Wi-Fi 7 as well, which can provide peak theoretical speeds of over 40 Gbps, a 4× increase over Wi-Fi 6E.

    Newer Chip:

The current Apple TV model is powered by the A15 Bionic chip, which debuted in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models back in 2022. It seems likely that the upcoming Apple TV could feature an A18 or A19 chip, which would result in faster overall performance and potentially even Apple Intelligence support on tvOS.

    FaceTime Camera and Gesture Controls:

The introduction of tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, which allowed for video calls provided a connected iPhone or iPad had been attached. The next-gen Apple TV could gain a built-in camera, ensuring that users would no longer need to rely on an external device to make or receive video calls on the TV.

    Lower Price:

According to noted supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the next-gen Apple TV could be “more affordable,” with Apple aiming at a sub-$100 price point.

Both the 2010 and 2012 versions of the Apple TV were priced at $99 in the U.S. at launch, and Apple eventually lowered the price of the 2012 model to $69, so there is precedent for a sub-$100 Apple TV. Other companies like Amazon and Roku offer low-priced streaming sticks, with sale prices going as low as $19.99. In the U.S., the current Apple TV starts at $129 with 64GB of storage, and a 128GB model with an Ethernet port for wired internet is priced at $149.

    Timing:

Gurman has noted that the Apple TV could be released “toward the end of the year.” If so, Apple may be aiming at a September or October time frame, although November or December can’t be ruled out entirely.

  • iOS internal code references cite next-gen chips for upcoming Apple devices

iOS internal code references cite next-gen chips for upcoming Apple devices

A new leak has indicated that several of Apple’s next-generation chips are en route to future iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and HomePod mini devices.

Per MacRumors, an individual in China uploaded a YouTube video (with English subtitles) of an alleged iPhone 16 engineering prototype from last year. The device is said to be running an internal build of iOS 18 from March 2024, but it is a non-UI version, meaning that you cannot load the Home Screen or other interfaces.

Several code references within the internal iOS 18 build feature both codenames and identifiers for teh upcoming Apple chips, including the following devices:

    • A19 chip for the iPhone 17 Air, and likely iPhone 17e
    • A19 Pro chip for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
    • M5 chip for the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro
    • M5 Pro chip for the MacBook Pro and Mac mini
    • S11 chip for the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3
    • C2 modem for the iPhone 17e, likely the entire iPhone 18 lineup, and more
    • Proxima, the codename for an all-new Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip for the next Apple TV and HomePod mini models and more

The “Proxima” chip seems to be unknown and interesting. The unit was first reported on in 2024 by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who noted that it would be included in new Apple TV and HomePod mini models launching later this year. He also expects at least some iPhone 17 models to use the chip, along with future iPad and Mac models starting next year.

The Proxima chip is thought to be something that could help Apple transition away from Qualcomm for iPhone modems, and the company’s planned Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo chip will allow it to replace a chip that is currently supplied by Broadcom. Apple’s chip is expected to support Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, which would be an upgrade for the Apple TV (currently on Wi-Fi 6) and the HomePod mini (currently on Wi-Fi 4).

  • Rumor: At long last, Meta may be developing a native version of Instagram for the iPad

Rumor: At long last, Meta may be developing a native version of Instagram for the iPad

After more than a decade, it seems that an iPad-native version of Meta’s Instagram app may be coming to the iPad itself.

Per The Information, Instagram is now developing a native iPad app as part of a larger effort to compete with TikTok. In its most recent major update in February 2025, Instagram revised its own app so that it more closely resembled TikTok, too. Then in an April 7, 2025 meeting with creators, Instagram owner Meta showed off its Edits video-editing app that it added in that February update.

At present, Meta has declined to comment as to the status of the app on the iPad. Still, this is better than before, when Meta chief Adam Mosseri shrugged about he wasn’t making an iPad app. “Yup, we get this one a lot,” he said in 2022. “It’s still just not a big enough group of people to be a priority.”

Still, this is something, and the field may be shifting to allow for this.

As always, stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
