  • iOS 11.2 released over the weekend, adds Apple Pay Cash, improved wireless charging, chases down date bug which could cause a soft reset loop

It’s pretty unusual for Apple to release a major iOS update over the weekend, but the company did this with iOS 11.2, which, among other changes, offers support for Apple Pay Cash, 7.5-watt charging on compatible devices and a fix for a nasty date bug that can cause devices to enter a soft reset loop.

The update seems to have been released early to handle a recently discovered date bug that can cause springboard to crash, rendering an affected device barely usable.

It’s also been noted that the update, which was released on December 2nd, seems to share the same creation time as the betas, which did not suffer from the date bug.

  • Apple expands Apple Pay Cash beta testing to employee base

Apple has reportedly expanded an internal test of its forthcoming Apple Pay Cash technology to include its retail employees, which suggests that it may be ready for public release in the near future.

Apple began rolling out the feature to retail employees today, asking workers to install the latest iOS 11.1 beta and a special device certificate in order to enable the P2P function. Employees taking part in the internal evaluation are required to whitelist iCloud accounts in order to use the service.

Signs of the expanded Apple Pay Cash test emerged last week when select corporate staff were granted access to the upcoming feature.

  • iOS 11 “Messages in iCloud” feature touted, release date unknown

This may be another case of having to wait a little bit for an iOS 11 feature that was shown in a demo but not released as of yet.

Apple’s “Messages is iCloud” feature, which was touted at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference event, was removed during the beta cycle and will return at some undisclosed point in the future.

The “Messages in iCloud” feature synchronized a user’s Messages “stack” between devices seamlessly. With the feature set implemented, deleting a message on one logged-in device would strike it from all, plus only the newest messages would be stored on-device with the rest held in iCloud and loaded only when needed.

  • Apple Pay Cash feature to arrive later this year following iOS 11 release

While iOS 11 just hit today, a few features are still forthcoming.

Apple announced that its Apple Pay Cash feature will not ship until an update “coming this fall.” It is not clear is this is a delay, or if Apple didn’t plan on rolling out the feature with the launch of iOS 11.

It’s been noted that Apple announced that the feature would be added following the iOS 11 launch, similar to the way it originally launched Apple Pay itself.
