Apple launches repair program for Apple Watch Series 6 units with blank screen issues

If you’re having issues with your Apple Watch Series 6’s screen, you might want to look into this.

On Friday, Apple launched a repair program for the Apple Watch Series 6 to address an issue that can cause a small percentage of the devices to exhibit a permanently blank screen.

The issue impacts the 40mm Apple Watch Series 6 units, and affected devices were manufactured between April 2021 and September 2021. Apple has provided a serial number checker on its website to allow users to see if their devices are eligible for the complimentary repair by the company or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. .

The program covers eligible Apple Watch Series 6 models for two years after the first retail sale of the unit.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Apple begins requiring employees to return to in-person work via “hybrid” plan

Apple begins requiring employees to return to in-person work via “hybrid” plan

Apple employees have officially begun returning to in-person work after working remotely since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Apple’s decision to return to in-person, albeit on a very limited basis for the time being, has not been without criticism, but the company has pressed ahead with its plans.

Following multiple starts and stops due to spikes in COVID-19 cases, Apple officially set its April 11 date for return to in-person work back in March. As of April 11, corporate employees are now required to work in person at least one day per week. Starting three weeks from today, on May 2, employees will be required to work from the office two days per week.

Come May 23, employees will need to be in the office three days per week as part of Apple’s “hybrid” work plan. Apple CEO Tim Cook has not reveaed how long the hybrid plan would be in place for, and described it as a “pilot,” which implies that it could change as needed.

Apple is one of the few Silicon Valley companies mandating in-person work. Twitter is allowing its employees to permanently work from home, as can most Facebook employees. Google is mandating some teams return to in-person work starting as early as this month, but many employees are able to permanently work from home.

As is familiar by now, this is all dependent on whichever COVID-19 strain is active at any given point in time. The current variant in the United States, coined “BA.2,” is a sub variant of the highly infectious Omicron variant, and could shift how safe it is for Apple employees to return to in-person work.

  • Google Maps for iOS receives significant update, new navigation options for Apple Watch users

Google Maps for iOS receives significant update, new navigation options for Apple Watch users

Google has rolled out a hefty new update to version 6.12 of its Google Maps app for iOS.

The update offers the following fixes, changes, and new features:

    • Makes it easier to navigate on iPhone and Apple Watch (watchOS users will be offered the ability to get directions directly on their wrist, Google users will soon be able to tap an Apple Watch shortcut and begin navigating with a connected iPhone, and a new “Take Me Home” complication will offer easy access to directions back to a set location).
    • Offers a more detailed navigation map, complete with streetlight data and enhanced building outlines.
    • Additional detail in select cities for iOS and CarPlay.
    • Navigation routes that require traveling on toll roads will now display estimated toll pricing that’s based on factors like payment methods and the time of week. Google says this feature is coming to 2,000 toll roads in the U.S., India, Japan, and Indonesia in April.
    • Other smaller features include a new pinned trip widget that will let users see selected trips, as well as an updated Google Maps search widget that has a smaller UI.

Google has also stated that it plans to add Google Maps integration directly to Shortcuts, Spotlight, and Siri. Once rolled out, the feature will allow users to ask Siri for directions via voice commands.

Google Maps 6.12 is available for free and requires iOS 12.2 or later to install and run.

If you’ve tried the updated version and have any feedback to offer, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

  • Apple to announce Q2 2022 earnings report on April 28

Apple to announce Q2 2022 earnings report on April 28

Apple has announced that the company will be revealing its earnings for Q2 2022 on April 2022, complete with the customary conference call featuring CEO Tim Cook and CFO Luca Maestri.

The investor conference call, which usually occurs shortly after the release of Apple’s financial results, will take place at 2:00 p.m. Pacific, 5 p.m. Eastern. The call, which will be streamed via the investor webpage, will see the executives discuss the results for the three-month period ending in March 2022.

Apple’s holiday sales usually boost the Q1 results, while the Q2 results are typically lower, incorporating the tail-end of the high-sales period.

While Apple didn’t introduce new products in the early months of the quarter, it did launch new hardware in March. The new additions include the Mac Studio, the Studio Display, the third-generation iPhone SE, and the M1-equipped iPad Air 5.

Since the outset of the pandemic, Apple has declined to provide detailed guidance in its quarterly results. It is unclear exactly what Apple expects to earn in Q2 2022.

  • iPad batteries may drain faster when linked to AirTags

iPad batteries may drain faster when linked to AirTags

A number of iPad owners who also own Apple AirTags have complained that the iPad battery drains faster when the two Apple devices are near each other. This is true especially if the two Apple devices are registered using the same Apple ID.

Per Annoying Technology’s Philipp Defner, over the past several months, his iPad Pro’s battery began draining faster than usual. When he checked which activity was draining the iPad battery, “Find my App” was discharging 35 percent of the battery drain of his iPad. Apple AirTags are supposed to communicate with other Find My devices to track the whereabouts of those devices.

Apple’s AirTags, which were released last April, feature a tracking device that can be used to locate important items. The accessories use Apple’s Find My Network to track the location of missing items by communicating with the AirTags attached to those items.

The AirTags shouldn’t be consuming this much of an iPad’s battery, and are designed to communicate with other Apple devices through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol. This could be a software bug that could be repaired via an iPadOS update. Apple must first acknowledge that the reported issue is indeed a prevailing issue among many iPad users.

If you’ve seen this issue on your end, please let us know about experience in the comments.
