Apple unveils Apple Watch Series 10, highlights thinner bezel, wide-angle OLED display, other new features

Over at Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” media event, Apple unveiled its long-awaited Apple Watch Series 10, complete with a wide-angle OLED display that is larger than the Apple Watch Ultra, the company describing it as the “biggest display and thinnest design ever.”

The new model measures 8.7mm thick, is nearly 10 percent thinner than the Apple Watch Series 9, and weighs 20 percent less than the Stainless Steel Series 9. The Aluminum cases also weigh up to 10 percent less, while the Series 10 also comes in Grade 5 titanium, replacing stainless steel.

Apple has stated that this is its fastest-charging Apple Watch to date, and can reach an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes. The unit also uses a new neural network to reduce background noise when making calls with the watch.

Apple has gone on to state that the Apple Watch Series 10 can play music and podcasts directly through its speaker for the first time ever. The unit also includes a new depth gauge (good to 20 feet), water temperature for pool and open water swims, and a new metal back that integrates the antenna into the housing.

Where health features are concerned, the new model can alert you to sleep apnea conditions. Apple says the algorithm was developed using machine learning and clinical data, and then validated in a large clinical trial.

The new Apple Watch Series 10 comes in Jet Black and Rose Gold, joining the existing Silver Aluminum colors. The Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399, and $499 for cellular models, and will be available to purchase from Friday, September 20.

  • Rumor: Almost all of Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” media event, product details leaked

Rumor: Almost all of Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” media event, product details leaked

Someone may have just leaked the whole can of worms as to Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” media event, which is scheduled for Monday, September 9.

Per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the event will include not only the iPhone 16, but the Apple Watch X, Apple Watch SE, and budget AirPods.

Apple can be expected to announce the four iPhone models in the form of the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will look practically the same as their 2023 siblings, rocking 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens with the same aluminum design. The units will feature a faster processor, 8GB of memory, and the Action button from the Pro models. Vertical cameras for fancy spatial video recording may also be included.

Where the Pro and Pro Max models are concerned, the screen sizes will go up to 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max, complete with thinner bezels for that slightly sleeker feel. The Pro will receive a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, 5x optical zoom for the smaller Pro, and a new DSLR-style Capture button. The Pro models are also expected to trade in blue for gold titanium.

Apple can also be expected to launch the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The Series 10 will probably receive the most attention, and while there’s been some debate as to whether it will be called the “Apple Watch Series X” given that 2024 marks the tenth anniversary of the device, Gurman’s report calls it the “Series 10.” At present, the Apple Watch Series 10 is rumored to feature a thinner case and larger screen, though not much for Apple Intelligence incorporation to date.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to receive some internal tweaks, and sleep apnea detection can be expected to be a major new feature, even if blood-oxygen sensing doesn’t return. The new Apple Watch SE is the first update in two years. Expect slightly improved performance under the hood and the usual focus on fitness tracking and basic health features.

Both new entry-level and mid-tier AirPods, and both will have a look inspired by the AirPods Pro and bring USB-C charging. The mid-tier version steps things up with a speaker on the case, Find My support, and noise cancellation. There’s also a growing focus on hearing health, with future updates turning AirPods into makeshift hearing aids, but those features are probably delayed.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Bluetooth 6.0 protocol finalized, could help boost Precision Finding feature in next-gen Apple devices

Bluetooth 6.0 protocol finalized, could help boost Precision Finding feature in next-gen Apple devices

The latest protocol for Bluetooth, version 6.0, was released earlier this week, and includes a new feature that could make Apple’s Find My App even more precise across various devices.

Bluetooth 6.0 introduces “Channel Sounding,” a feature that will bring “true distance awareness” to billions of future Bluetooth devices and accessories. The organization behind Bluetooth promises that this technology will achieve “centimeter-level accuracy over considerable distances,” making it easier and quicker for users to locate lost items.

Apple currently offers a Precision Finding feature in its Find My app that utilizes its Ultra Wideband technology and helps users pinpoint the location of given accessories. The feature has been available since the iPhone 11, and can help find an AirTag or a second-generation AirPods Pro charging case.

The combination of the Bluetooth 6.0 and Ultra Wideband technologies could help improve Precision Finding. The new Bluetooth 6.0 protocol may also boost the location process for devices that are not equipped with Ultra Wideband chips, such as the Apple TV’s Siri Remote and devices released by other companies.

It’s unknown when the first devices equipped with Bluetooth 6.0 will be released, and given that the specification only recently became available to hardware manufacturers and developers, the first Apple devices with support are likely at least a year away.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Rumor: AirPods 3 Pro earbuds to feature “much better” Active Noise Cancellation feature over previous models

Rumor: AirPods 3 Pro earbuds to feature “much better” Active Noise Cancellation feature over previous models

If you’re hoping for dramatically improved Active Noise Cancellation on the AirPods Pro 3, you may get it.

Per a Tuesday post on X, noted leaked Kosutami claimed that the AirPods Pro 3 will feature “much better” active noise cancellation compared to the AirPods Pro 2, which launched nearly two years ago. However, the leaker did not provide any specific details about this alleged upgrade.

Apple currently advertises the AirPods 2 as featuring “up to twice as much” active noise cancellation compared to the original AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Pro 3 may see a significant improvement beyond this.

Apple is expected to announce both low-end and mid-tier AirPods 4 wireless earbuds at its September 9 media event. Kosutami claimed that the AirPods Pro 3 are also coming “soon.” Still, it is unclear if this information is accurate, as other media sources previously reported that Apple planned to release a redesigned AirPods Pro model in 2025.

Both Apple’s low-end and mid-tier AirPods 4 units are rumored to feature a revised design with better fit in the ear, improved sound quality, and an updated charging case with a USB-C port. The mid-tier AirPods 4 are also said to feature active noise cancellation and a speaker in the charging case that can play a sound for Find My location tracking.

The AirPods Max headphones are rumored to be updated later this year, albeit the only anticipated change for this model is a switch to a USB-C charging port instead of Lightning.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
