Rumor: Apple to ship first OLED MacBook Air in 2028

Come 2028, Apple will release a completely nifty MacBook Air with an OLED display.

Per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to transition the MacBook Air from LCD to OLED within its 2028 product line. This will be part of a larger transition to the technology, including the flagship iPad Pro and MacBook models as well as the iPad mini, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and MacBook Air, and also likely in that order.

Apple already uses OLED displays in the iPad Pro. There are apparently no plans to add OLED to the low-cost iPad. The ‌MacBook Pro‌ will be updated with an OLED display when it is next redesigned, perhaps as soon as late 2026, and it will include touch screen functionality, per Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

It’s thought that Apple will release an M5-based MacBook Air in early 2026, complete with an LCD display. Should Apple continue its established upgrade pattern, the first OLED MacBook Air will be powered by the M7 chip.

When the MacBook Air moves from LCD to OLED display technology, it will gain several advantages – brighter screens, deeper blacks with higher contrast, improved power efficiency that can extend battery life, and other enhancements.

  • Rumor: Apple may introduce MacBook Pro with OLED display in 2026, include Samsung Display as a supplier

Rumor: Apple may introduce MacBook Pro with OLED display in 2026, include Samsung Display as a supplier

If you’re hankering for an OLED MacBook Pro, it may still arrive in 2026, with Apple changing its supplier to Samsung Display in the notebook display supply chain.

Following the iPhone and iPad lineups switching display technologies to OLED, the MacBook lineup is also anticipated to eventually make the switch. A recent report from the analytical group Omdia discussed Apple’s MacBook supply chain for 2025, with analysts discussing changes that will be happening in the future.

The last paragraph actually discusses Apple shifting the MacBook line from LCD TFT to OLED. Per Lina Lin, Senior Principal Analyst for Tablet and Notebook Display and OEM at Omdia, Apple is expected to introduce OLED to MacBooks “starting 2026.” Lin went on to propose that Samsung Display will probably be added to Apple’s MacBook supply chain at the time as well. At present, Samsung Display functions as one of two major suppliers of OLED panels for Apple’s iPhone handhelds, and is thought to be a valid contender to become a supplier for the MacBook models.

For Apple, a shift to OLED makes sense, as it would result in a display that’s brighter, has higher contrast, and is extremely vivid. The panel would also be thinner, due to not needing a backlight, which could help reduce the weight and thickness of the MacBook Pro itself. A switch to OLED is not just expected for the MacBook Pro, as the MacBook Air is anticipated to benefit from the display technology.

However, current expectations estimate that the technology could arrive as late as 2029.

  • Rumor: MacBook Pro notebooks with OLED displays could begin surfacing in 2026

Rumor: MacBook Pro notebooks with OLED displays could begin surfacing in 2026

You may start seeing MacBook Pro notebooks with OLED in 2026.

Per a supply chain report, the display technology could arrive for Apple’s flagship notebook in roughly two years’ time. The report includes the iPad Pro, which the report says will triple demand for OLED screens in tablets, and going forward, will influence competitors’ strategies to compete with Apple in this particular market.

Omdia’s Senior Principal Ricky Park offered this opinion in the report:

“Apple is highly likely to incorporate OLED into its MacBook Pro models as early as 2026,. This move could spark a significant surge in OLED demand within the notebook market, potentially reaching over 60 million units by 2031.”

It’s currently unknown if Omdia has any particular insight gleaned from data it has discovered on the release timing, though. OLED MacBook Pro models have been rumored for some time. And, nearly all of those rumors have put it a year or more away, regardless of when the rumor was made.

OLED screens offer higher contrast ratios, require no backlighting, and are thinner and use less power than current displays. Apple has previously been reported to release a MacBook Pro with an OLED screen in 2024.

Apple’s MacBook Pro lines currently use LCD systems, and OLED displays would offer improved response times and contrast ratios. Still, given the higher manufacturing costs associated with OLEDs, transitioning from LCD to OLED might only be considered when substantial consumer demand exists to support it. Apple’s release of the technology on the iPad before the Mac may be to gauge consumer interest in potentially paying more for the technology.

  • Rumor: Apple to release updated iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air models towards the end of March

Rumor: Apple to release updated iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air models towards the end of March

Apple seems likely to launch new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and MacBook Air models “around the end of March,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, which was published on Sunday.

The iPad Air models are expected to gain a new 12.9-inch display size as well as an updated 10.9-inch model. Other expected features include an M2 chip for faster performance, a redesigned rear camera bump, Wi-Fi 6E support, and Bluetooth 5.3. No major external design changes are expected.

The current fifth-generation iPad Air with the M1 chip was released in March 2022.

Apple is also thought to be working on the next-gen iPad Pro models, complete with 11-inch and 13-inch units that will be the first iPad equipped with OLED displays. As mentioned before, OLED technology would offer increased brightness, more vivid colors, higher contrast ratio, lower power consumption, and other benefits compared to existing models with LCD panels. Apple currently uses OLED displays for the latest iPhone and Apple Watch models, excluding the lower-end iPhone SE. Unfortunately, OLED panels are a bit pricier, and the next-gen iPad Pro models could be a bit more expensive as a result.

Other rumored features for the next-gen iPad Pro models include Apple’s latest M3 chip for faster performance, MagSafe wireless charging, a redesigned Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad and an aluminum top casing, and a landscape-oriented front camera. There may also be rear camera design changes, as seen on the next-gen iPad Air models. The current iPad Pro models with the M2 chip were released in October 2022.

Finally, the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air notebooks, which launched a year apart given production delays, are expected to be updated simultaneously this March. The key new feature for the laptops will be Apple’s latest M3 chip.

With the M3 chip, the next MacBook Air models will gain hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading for improved graphics rendering in games, including more accurate lighting, reflections, and shadows. Apple already updated the 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, and 24-inch iMac with the M3 chip last year.

While no major design changes are expected for the M3 MacBook Air, the notebook could gain support for Wi-Fi 6E like other Macs. Apple last updated the 13-inch MacBook Air in July 2022, while the first-ever 15-inch MacBook Air was released in June 2023.
