  • Some MacBook Pro configurations see up to a two-month delay ahead of possible next-gen M5 MacBook Pro release

Some MacBook Pro configurations see up to a two-month delay ahead of possible next-gen M5 MacBook Pro release

If there’s one telltale sign of a forthcoming next generation of hardware, it’s usually supply constraints and how this affects shipping.

Per MacRumors, the availability has recently tightened for the MacBook Pro on Apple’s online storefront, with select configurations facing up to a two-month delivery timeframe in the United States.

A few 14-inch and 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro notebooks are still available without any shipping delay. Still, the estimated delivery dates for many configurations with the M4 Max chip now extend from February 6 to February 24 or even later. At the most extreme end, all built-to-order 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations with a 16-core M4 Max chip and 128GB of RAM are estimated to be delivered as late as March 17 on Apple’s online store.

In the case of the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, which was updated to an M5 chip in October, the wait continues for configurations with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These delays have historically indicated that a forthcoming generation is on the horizon, although ongoing RAM supply constraints could also be contributing to the shipping delays.

Apple unveiled MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023, so there is precedent for a MacBook Pro refresh in January. Apple’s Creator Studio bundle of creative apps launches on Wednesday, January 28, and the company will be holding its next quarterly earnings call on Thursday, January 29.

  • Rumor: M5-based MacBook Pro units may not arrive until 2026

Rumor: M5-based MacBook Pro units may not arrive until 2026

Apple’s long-awaited M5-based MacBook Pro may not arrive until 2026.

Per a research note released on Tuesday by noted Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company’s MacBook Pro notebooks may not be released until 2026.

Kuo discussed how the A20 chips in iPhone 18 models will be packaged with WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) technology, which integrates the so-called “underfill and molding processes” for more efficient manufacturing and increased yield, a term that refers to the percentage of functional chips that can be obtained per silicon wafer.

Kuo stated that the high-end M5 chips, which are most likely the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, will continue to have separate underfill and molding processes during production. This also ties in with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stating that Apple was “considering” pushing the release of the M5 MacBook Pro models until 2026.

  • Rumor: Apple has paused development of a foldable iPad

Rumor: Apple has paused development of a foldable iPad

Although Apple is well into the development of a foldable iPhone, the company is rumored to have paused work on a larger-screened foldable iPad, it appears that development has stopped for the time being while Apple focuses on a foldable ‌iPhone‌.

According to Digitimes, Apple has paused development of a foldable iPad given manufacturing difficulties, increased production expenses for foldable display technology, and modest consumer demand for larger foldable devices.

This doesn’t imply that this is a permanent decision, and it’s thought that Apple could revisit a foldable iPad or MacBook when the technology improves enough to become more affordable.

The foldable device was rumored to be between 18.8 inches and 20.2 inches, with OLED display technology and a crease-free design. Information about a potential launch timeline has varied from 2026 to 2028.

Where the foldable ‌iPhone is concerned‌, the device is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models next year.

Apple’s CarPlay 2 delay confirmed, company cites work continuing with collaboration from automakers

Apple’s CarPlay 2 technology, which was promised in 2024, has been delayed and still needs some work.

Apple confirmed the delay via its CarPlay 2 website, though the system is still undergoing development.

In a statement to 9to5Mac, however, Apple said that it is still working with “several automakers” to implement the next-generation CarPlay experience.

All throughout 2024, Apple’s CarPlay site claimed that the first models with CarPlay 2 would arrive in 2024.

Up until December, the language remained unchanged, leading may to believe that a launch was imminent and the software would hit its deadline. The deadline passed with no announcement, eching a similar event from late 2023, when Apple promised the first CarPlay 2-supporting automakers would be announced. They kept that promise, just barely, with a December news drop.

At this point, Apple has yet to announce a new date as to when to expect CarPlay 2 as well as a list of auto manufacturers that will support it.
