Apple Maps now features cycling directions for all 50 U.S. states

If you’re effectively one with your bicycle, you’re going to like this.

Per Apple Maps enthusiast Justin Obeirne, Apple Maps cycling directions are now officially available in all 50 states.

In terms of holdouts, it was Hawaii that was the last to receive directions. According to Obeirne’s tracker, Hawaii was finally added in August.

As long as cycling directions are possible in a given area, Apple Maps users will be able to find their destination no matter what their location in the United States. Obeirne provided this information through an animated map that showcased the evolution of Apple Maps’ cycling directions. It also seems that Apple spent most of 2022 completing this task.

With Apple’s upcoming iOS 16 operating system, which is currently in its public beta stage, users will be able to set up multiple stops for biking directions. Additionally, multiple stop routing will also be a feature for driving and walking. The feature is especially helpful for those planning a more complicated trip, or it can be especially useful for those that run deliveries.

Users will be able to add up to 15 stops to their trips, and can automatically sync routes from Mac to iPhone.

iOS 16 will also bring transit updates to Maps, and users will be able to view the total cost of their journey, add transit cards to their Wallet, see low balances and replenish transit cards all within Apple Maps.

Under iOS 16, Apple Maps will alert users if part of their route entails walking. Users will also be able to see elevation changes in a route.

iOS 16 is likely to see a release relatively soon, with the expectations being this fall, as per usual with iOS releases.

If you’ve had a chance to try cycling directions via Apple Maps, please let us know about your experiences in the comments.

Rumor: Apple could debut Apple Watch extreme sports model later this year

Apple is rumored to be working on an Apple Watch geared towards extreme sports athletes, complete with a larger display than prior models, along with a bigger battery and a rugged metal case. The new Apple Watch model should arrive the latter half of 2022, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The company has previously crafted Apple Watch units mainly from aluminum, and has had stainless steel and titanium models available as well. Speaking with sources close to the story, Mark Gurman has noted that the purported extremes sports watch will use a case stronger than metal material, which will also feature a more shatter-resistant screen.

The display will also offer more screen real estate. Currently, the largest Apple Watch Series 7 has a display measuring 1.9 inches diagonally. The rugged version should be closer to 2 inches, providing about 7 percent more screen area than other models. Gurman suggests Apple might use the additional screen real estate to show more fitness metrics or information on watch faces at a time.

It’s thought that the updated Apple Watch Series 8 models will include an S8 processor. Performance may not get much of a bump from the current S7 chip in Apple Watch Series 7.

It’s also thought that the extreme sports Apple Watch will include improvements in tracking metrics. This could offer more precise tracking of elevations during hiking workouts as well as more data from swim sessions.

In spite of the leaks and rumors, it’s unknown as to how much an extreme sports Apple Watch will retail for. Currently, the stainless steel variety of the Apple Watch Series 7 starts at $699. A titanium option starts at $799 for a 41mm Apple Watch.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
