SUV driver who plowed through Boston-area Apple Store location identified, charged with reckless homicide

Following up on yesterday’s story about the SUV incident at the Apple Store location in Hingham, Massachusetts, the driver of the vehicle has stated that the event was an accident caused by his foot becoming stuck on the accelerator pedal.

The crash ended the life of Kevin Bradley, 65, of New Jersey. Bradley was a construction worker helping with improvements to the store. At the time the black SUV accelerated into the Apple Store, Bradley was helping another worker remove a barrier from in front of the store.

Bradly was struck prior to the vehicle entered the glass storefront, after which, the vehicle drove through to the back of the store. Reports have indicated that the SUV went all the way back to a rear storage area proper to stopping.

The driver of the black 2019 Toyota 4Runner has been identified as 53-year-old Bradley Rein, of Hingham, Mass. Rein told authorities his foot became stuck on the accelerator pedal, and he could not recover it. The driver said he tried braking with his left foot but was unable to stop the vehicle.

The accident resulted in no less than 20 injuries, some critical, along with the fatality. Per the police report, Rein stated that he had no medical issues that would have affected his ability to drive and had serviced his vehicle regularly. Rein has been charged with motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

The Hingham District Court has arraigned Rein on the charges and is holding him on $100,000 bail. In the past, Rein has been cited for driving under the influence in Roxbury, Vermont. That incident happened in December 2020, and those charges were later expunged. Officials say the man has an otherwise clean criminal history. A breath alcohol test performed on Rein after the accident registered a 0.00 percent blood alcohol level.

Dozens injured, one killed after SUV crashes into front of Boston-area Apple Store location

Dozens of people were reported injured Monday morning after an SUV crashed into the Derby Street Apple Store outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The black SUV crashed through the glass front of the store, injuring dozens and trapping as many as four people.

According to the Patriot Ledger, one person died from injuries related to the crash, while four others remain in critical condition.

Authorities from various police and fire departments reported that a total of 16 people were transported to area hospitals alongside the fatality.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz stated there was an ongoing criminal investigation into the driver of the SUV. The driver, reportedly, was alert, bloodied and talking to officials. One fire marshall reportedly indicated that video footage of the incident suggests it was an intentional attack.

The incident reportedly began at 10:45 a.m. Monday morning, with a witness reporting that a black Toyota 4Runner drove “full speed into the Apple store.” The vehicle drove all the way to the back wall of the store, trapping at least four people while insuring dozens more.By mid-afternoon, the victim count listed 19 injured and one killed. Apple has stated that the victim killed was a construction worker.

The store, which is located in Hingham, Massachusetts, opened an hours before the incident. As of 11:49 a.m. Eastern, the Hingham Police Department was not answering phone calls or posting updates to its social media or website. However, police scanner traffic indicated South Shore Hospital in neighboring Weymouth, Mass. was rejecting additional trauma patients.

Reporters on the scene cited a large hole in the glass front of the Apple Store. Dozens of first responders arrived to treat multiple victims on the ground outside the store, and some were placed on stretchers and taken away by ambulance. Departments from neighboring cities Cohasset and Hull were on the scene, and emergency services requested a medical helicopter. The helicopter, ultimately, proved unnecessary. Following the crash, first responders triaged the injured and offered them medical assistance.

By shortly after noon Eastern time, tents were being erected in front of the store to help with treatment. At the time, temperatures were just above freezing , with Feels Like temperatures well below freezing. The city was also under a gale warning, so sheltering victims from weather exposure is certainly crucial.

Police later called for a tow truck to remove the SUV.

This represents the first major emergency incident at an Apple Store since a gunman took hostages at an Amsterdam Apple Store in February.
