  • LG UltraFine 5K monitors experiencing errors within two meters of wireless routers

Well, this is kind of a mess.

LG’s UltraFine 5K monitor, which has become something of a spiritual successor to Apple’s Thunderbolt display and began shipping out from the Apple online store this week, appears to be suffering from a major fault wherein it will begin flickering when places within two meters (6.5 feet) of a wireless router. Once the flickering has begun, the monitor will go black and become unusable.

An LG Electronics support person confirmed the issue, saying it “only happens for the 5K monitors we have, not other LG monitors.”

It’s also been noted that, if plugged into a MacBook Pro, the failure can lead to being forced to reboot the notebook to bring it back. The failure does not occur when the monitor is out of a two meter range of a wireless router.

  • “Flickering” issue on 2016 MacBook Pro notebooks seems to be likely caused by third-party software

Following up on the flickering issue we reported about, an undetermined number of 2016 MacBook Pro models are suffering from disturbing graphical rendering issues, with owners reporting full screen artifacts, screen tearing, flashing, random “glitches” and even system crashes. The issue, however, is related to overzealous third-party software and is not indicative of a critical hardware flaw.

Reports of graphics-related issues first surfaced after the release of the 2016 MacBook Pro.

While initial reports were unable to pin down a root cause for the errors, sources close to the story said that overaggressive or otherwise sloppy code distributed in third-party software is to blame. That said, a small number of users report seeing similar problems with Apple’s own Photos app.

As nifty as the new 2016 15-inch MacBook Pro might be, there might be some video-related bugs to hunt down.

A number of posts have highlighted video-related issues, including flickering screens, have been reported. The issues have also included changes in the shade of colors alongside the considerable screen flicker.

One post offered the following description:

“I’ve had my new MacBook Pro for about a week now, already the screen has started flickering. Today the whole screen became all pixelated and glitchy to the point that I couldn’t see the mouse cursor moving. I reset the MacBook and now it’s still flickering.”

  • Apple releases MacBook Air Mid 2013 Software Update 1.0, homes in on reported bugs

If you bought a mid-2013 MacBook Air, the firmware update you’ve been waiting for has arrived.

Apple on Thursday released an update to its recently released MacBook Air models, addressing issues affecting Wi-Fi connectivity, screen flickering when using Adobe Photoshop and volume fluctuation during video playback.

Per AppleInsider, Apple’s “MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update 1.0” is the first for the company’s thin-and-light lineup that was in June, and fixes a number of bugs users have complained about over the past few weeks.

Among the initial problems cited by users was intermittent loss of Wi-Fi signals, a problem Apple partially addressed in a separate AirPort Utility software update earlier this month.

Another problem cropped up last week when MacBook Air owners complained of uncontrollable volume fluctuations while playing video content in both first-party and third-party applications. This too has reportedly been solved with the latest Software Update 1.0.

Finally, the release fixes an issue that would occasionally cause screen flickering when using Adobe Photoshop.

The MacBook Air (Mid 2013) Software Update is available as a 3.55 megabyte download and can also be retrieved via the OS X Software Update feature on qualifying MacBook Air notebooks.
