Game Mode code references found in the fourth iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 developer betas

One of the features of Apple’s forthcoming macOS Sonoma operating system is Game Mode, which automatically adjusts system settings to increase performance when the user plays a game on the Mac.

While this feature is currently exclusive to Mac computers, it seems that Apple has been working to bring Game Mode to devices running iOS 17. On Tuesday, Apple released its fourth iOS 17 beta to the developer community. While the update didn’t bring any major new features, a series of references in the code offered evidence of Apple working on Game Mode for iOS and iPadOS.

A number of the frameworks used to control Game Mode in macOS Sonoma have been added to iOS 17 beta 4. While iOS and macOS share a lot of code due to universal apps, Game Mode has never been officially announced as a feature for the iPhone or iPad, which could indicate that Apple has also been experimenting with the feature on iOS.

This could also suggest that Apple is exploring ways to enhance gaming performance on its mobile devices. The Game Mode feature, once initiated, prioritizes hardware resources for a game, allowing it to run more smoothly. Apple also claims that Game Mode significantly reduces Bluetooth latency, which is excellent news for gamers using AirPods or Bluetooth controllers.

  • Five Apple Silicon-only features of macOS Sonoma identified, will be excluded on Intel-based Macs

Five Apple Silicon-only features of macOS Sonoma identified, will be excluded on Intel-based Macs

The Apple Silicon machines have been around for a few years now, and the time has come for Apple to prioritize some features for its hardware architecture as opposed to the Intel architecture, which will be left behind.

That being said, here are the five macOS Sonoma features that will only be available for Apple Silicon-based Macs:

Presenter Overlay: This utilizes a Neural Engine-powered feature called Lift Subject from Background. It places your cutout from the webcam feed over content in a presentation.

Screen Sharing: This uses macOS Sonoma’s advanced media engine to make screen sharing more responsive over high-bandwidth connections.

Siri: The newly abbreviated wake word “Siri” is only available for Apple Silicon-equipped Macs and AirPods Pro 2.

Game Mode: This advantage of Apple Silicon’s SoC design by prioritizing gaming for the CPU and GPU while also reducing latency with wireless accessories.

Made-for-iPhone: Made-for-iPhone hearing devices will be able to pair directly with Apple Silicon Macs (excluding those with a base M1 chip).

As Apple continues to update macOS with new features, more will be exclusive to Apple Silicon processors until the entire operating system doesn’t support Intel chipsets. That isn’t macOS Sonoma, but it could happen within a few years.

macOS Sonoma will release to the public in the fall of 2023 and is thought to be likely to release sometime in October.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

WWDC: Apple announces macOS Sonoma, highlights new features and changes

macOS Sonoma is coming this fall, was demonstrated on Monday at WWDC, and once again, the company has promised widespread changes and new features to its desktop operating system.

The company highlighted the following major fixes and changes:

    • Interactive widgets which can be placed on the desktop: Widgets blend into your desktop wallpaper to not be obtrusive when you’re working, and with Continuity you can use the same widgets from your iPhone on your Mac.
    • Enhanced videoconferencing features: This includes Presenter Overlay, which allows the user to display themselves in front of the content they are sharing. Reactions let users share how they feel within a video session. Screen Sharing has been improved with a simplified process.
    • Private Browsing: This has been updated within Apple’s Safari web browser and provides greater protection from trackers and from people who might have access to the user’s device.
    • Profiles within Safari: Offers a way to separate browsing between topics, like having one for work and one for personal browsing. There’s also a new way to create web apps that work like normal apps and let you get to your favorite website faster.
    • Screen Savers: These feature slow-motion videos of various locations worldwide. They shuffle between landscape, Earth, underwater, or cityscape themes, similar to what you’ll see on tvOS.
    • Game Mode: As the name suggests, this is optimized for gaming and delivers an optimized gaming experience with smoother and more consistent frame rates. It dramatically lowers audio latency with AirPods and reduces input latency with game controllers, and it works with any game on Mac.

The developer beta version was released on Monday, and Apple has stated that a public beta will launch in July.
