  • Walmart explains why it hasn’t accepted Apple Pay, and other NFC technologies within the U.S.

Walmart explains why it hasn’t accepted Apple Pay, and other NFC technologies within the U.S.

If you have ever wondered why, after all these years, Walmart still refuses to accept Apple Pay or other NFC payments at any of its 4,600+ stores in the U.S., a spokesperson has finally offered an explanation.

A spokesperson for Walmart on Thursday informed MacRumors that its position on contactless payments has not changed since we last reached out about the matter in 2022. The big-box retailer said it remains focused on its own convenient payment technologies available in the Walmart app, including Walmart Pay and Mobile Scan & Go.

The Walmart Pay app allows users to scan a QR code displayed at checkout to pay for their purchases via a payment card store in their Walmart app. Scan & Go allows Walmart+ members to scan barcodes on items while they shop, rather than having to sc

The spokesperson offered the following comment:

“We do not accept NFC and instead have implemented convenient solutions, such as Walmart Pay, that provide our customers easy, touchless payments on any smartphone. We have also invested in innovative technologies that go beyond payments, such as Scan & Go, which allow Sam’s Club and Walmart+ members to bypass the checkout altogether, providing a truly touchless shopping experience.”

Apple Pay launched over 10 years ago and has been accepted at over 90 percent of U.S. retailers as of 2022, per Apple. Other major Apple Pay holdouts in the U.S. have reversed course and started accepting it over the past few years, including The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Kroger, and Texas grocery store chain H-E-B, leaving Walmart as one of the country’s only major retailers not to accept Apple Pay.

Walmart has accepted Apple Pay in Canada since 2020.

  • Home Depot, H-E-B adopt Apple Pay for transactions

Home Depot, H-E-B adopt Apple Pay for transactions

If you were looking to finally use Apple Pay at Home Depot and Texas grocery chain H-E-B, you’re in luck.

After years of negotiation, Home Depot has finally adopted Apple Pay and other tap-to-pay methods at some of its U.S. locations in recent weeks.

Per Appleosophy, while the home improvement retailer has not officially announced that it accepts Apple Pay, so it is unclear which stores offer it. In a social media post earlier this year, the company said it was “evaluating a number of new payment methods, including a number of mobile payments,” but it had yet to make any “permanent decisions.”

Home Deport was one of the largest remaining Apple Pay holdouts after it dropped support for the service back in 2015. As previously mentioned, Texas-based grocery store chain H-E-B has begun gradually accepting Apple Pay as of this month. The chain has also announced that it will begin rolling out the ability to pay with Apple Pay and other tap-to-pay methods at all of its stores throughout October. The company’s other chains Central Market and Joe V’s Smart Shop already began accepting Apple Pay earlier this year, and now it will be accepted in actual H-E-B stores.

Walmart is currently one of the only major retailers in the U.S. that still does not accept Apple Pay.

  • Walmart continues to veer away from Apple Pay support, relies on its own payment platform

Walmart continues to veer away from Apple Pay support, relies on its own payment platform

While Kroger, the largest supermarket chain in the United States, began rolling out support for Apple Pay in April, Walmart continues to resist adopting Apple’s payment platform.

The company, in turn, has continued to push its own Walmart Pay platform. Whereas Apple Pay is contactless and requires users to simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch on the payment terminal, Walmart Pay relies on QR codes instead.

Walmart launched Walmart Pay across the United States way back in 2016. Since then, the platform has been slow to gain widespread adoption, and the move has generated some controversy, with customers asking for Apple Pay support at checkout. Walmart, in turn, has made the bizarre claim that Walmart Pay is more popular than Apple Pay.

“Walmart is so dumb for not having Apple Pay,” one user posted on Twitter today. “Walmart is still childish for not taking Apple Pay,” another writes. For some shoppers, Walmart’s decision not to accept Apple Pay has simply meant they shop at other retailers such as Target instead.

Walmart has yet to publicly reply to requests for comment as to the situation.

One current thought as to the holdout is that this has to do with the data restrictions. Apple does not share customer payment info with the merchant, something which Walmart relies heavily on to tie into their customer profile data models.

Walmart is by far the biggest Apple Pay holdout in the United States nowadays. Other notable chains that still don’t support the payment option include Home Depot and H-E-B. Neither of those companies has shown any intention of changing their stances.
