  • Apple releases macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update, seeks to address thermal issue in 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro notebooks

Apple has released a patch that it hopes will address a heat-related issue in the 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro notebooks.

The now-somewhat-infamous heat issue on the Core i9-powered 15-inch 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro has been identified as a software flaw in the system’s thermal management software, and Apple is rolling out a macOS patch to deal with the problem.

“Following extensive performance testing under numerous workloads, we’ve identified that there is a missing digital key in the firmware that impacts the thermal management system and could drive clock speeds down under heavy thermal loads on the new MacBook Pro,” noted an Apple spokesperson. “A bug fix is included in today’s macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update and is recommended.”

  • Apple’s 2018 i9-power Touch Bar MacBook Pro may include thermal issues that can throttle performance

Apple could have a bit of a thermal issue to contend with when it comes to its top of the line 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro.

The notebook, which features an i9 processor, may look amazingly fast on paper, but could throttle and slow down dramatically under a heavy workload.

Per YouTube reviewer David Lee, tests with the MacBook Pro with a 6-core 2.9 GHz Core i9 processor showed a significant slowdown after only a few seconds of rendering in Adobe Premiere the speed drops down to about 2.2 GHz. That’s in line with the base speed of Core i7 processor in the lowest cost version for the new 15-inch 6-core notebook.

  • Intel announces eighth-gen Core processors which could be incorporated into future desktop, notebook Macs

Even if Apple might be moving away from Intel’s chips for its future, Intel is still releasing some cool hardware worth of your consideration.

The processor manufacturer on Tuesdayintroduced a range of new eighth-generation Core processors appropriate for future MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac models.

The company also introduced the first-ever Core i9 processor for notebooks. With six cores and 12 threads, Intel says the Core i9 is the highest-performance notebook processor it has ever designed. The H-series processor has a 2.9GHz base clock speed with a Turbo Boost frequency of up to 4.8GHz.

  • Rumor: Apple to release updated MacBook Air on Tuesday

Following the recent refresh to its MacBook Pro line of notebooks last month, the same source who correctly predicted the new MacBook Pro notebook arrival date has stated that an updated MacBook Air could arrive as early as Tuesday.

Per AppleInsider, the same source has stated to Macworld UK that a new product will arrive Tuesday with the model MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. The “better” distinction reportedly means it is likely to be a Mac product, leading the tipster to suggest the refresh is a MacBook Air.

The report noted that there is “some potential” the listing could instead refer to a new 27″ Cinema Display. But the source said there are several thousand of the product headed to Australia, “which suggests a major new product.”

Further evidence for the MacBook Air refresh has been noted with current inventory levels of the ultra-light notebook apparently running low. The MacBook Air, starting at US$1,499, still ships within 24 hours from Apple’s online store.

In January, it was suggested that the MacBook Air refresh might have seen a delay due to limited availability of Intel’s Core i5 ultramobile processors. Those reports suggested Apple could adopt the ultra-thin 18W TDP processor. The Core i5-520UM has a maximum processor speed of 1.86GHz, and an integrated GPU with 500MHz of processing power. The 32nm dual-core chip also includes 3MB of L3 cache.

Apple last updated the MacBook Air in June of 2009, dropping its entry price to US$1,499 for a 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo-based system. Apple’s full line of MacBook Pros are also based on the Core 2 Duo processor.

In April, Apple updated its MacBook Pro line of notebook computers, with the high-end systems receiving Intel’s latest Core i7 and Core i5 mobile processors and new automated graphics switching technology.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
