Apple, Boys & Girls Clubs of America join forces to bring Everyone Can Code curriculum to additional regions within the United States

If you’re looking to get your kids into coding, you might like this.

Apple and local Boys & Girls Clubs of America have teamed up to launch Apple’s Everyone Can Code curriculum for the iPad in 10 new regions, including Atlanta; Austin, Texas; metro D.C.; Miami-Dade County, Florida; Wake County, North Carolina; and Silicon Valley, with the goal of expanding coding opportunities to clubs nationwide. Programming has already launched in Atlantic City, New Jersey; Chicago; Detroit; Nashville, Tennessee; and Newark, New Jersey.

Per Jim Clark, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America:

Boys & Girls Clubs of America is committed to helping youth reach their full potential, which includes equipping young people with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve them for years to come. We are thrilled to partner with Apple to enhance Club programming with innovative and educational coding activities that will build kids’ and teens’ engagement and opportunity in technology.

In New Jersey, the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City opened both a Design Lab as well as a STEAM Lab in the city. The Club will be opening a second STEAM Lab in January.

  • Texas Rangers issue warrant to decrypt iPhone SE following Southerland Springs shooting

Similar to the San Bernadino shooting of almost two years ago, Apple has officially been served with a search warrant for access to the iPhone SE used by the man responsible for the Sutherland Springs, Texas shooting. The move comes after an earlier fumble that saw the Texas Rangers and FBI fail to act within 48 hours to unlock the device in question with Touch ID…

The Texas Rangers served Apple with a warrant to access both David Kelley’s iPhone SE and iCloud account. The Rangers have also expressed interest in a second phone used by Kelley made by LG. Apple stated earlier this month that it contacted law enforcement officials roughly 48 hours after the shooting to see if it could be of any help. During that first 48 hours, when Touch ID would have still been enabled, law enforcement made no efforts to ask Apple for help or to use Touch ID to unlock the phone. Instead, it shipped the device off to a crime lab in Quantico, Virginia.

  • iOS 4 upgrade offers some battery life improvements over iOS 3 for iPhone 3G, 3GS handsets

With the recent release of iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.0.1, one question has needed to be answered: does the update boost your iPhone’s battery life. Per Macworld, it does, the lab downgrading an iPhone 3G that was running iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3 and running a series of tasks. The staff then upgraded the iPhone 3G to iOS4 and ran the same set of tasks.

The iPhone 3G with iOS 4 lasted 5% longer (10 minutes) than the iOS 3-configured iPhone 3G.

In additional tests, there proved to be an even greater increase in battery life with iOS 4 on an iPhone 4GS, with the updated iPhone 3GS lasting 14% longer (35 minutes) than with iOS 3.

Take a gander at the article for specific details behind each test. And in spite of AntennaGate, the iPhone 4 and the usual complaints that come with any upgrade (“iOS 2.0 used to paint my house for me and that’s why I’ll never upgrade!!!”), it’s nice to see the battery life improve a bit.

  • E3 2010: Portal 2 demoed, details surface

    3608.jpg

The long-awaited Portal 2 was demoed at this year’s E3 and the included gameplay footage aside, the following facts were garnered during the presentation:

    – The new title is wrapped around story, gameplay (fans wanted to be surprised again) and music (the Jonathan Coulton track “Still Alive” took off and became a calling card with fans were demanding music have practically a starring role in the title).

    – A lot of time has passed within the story between Portal 1 and 2 and the GLaDOS test computer is putting the labs back together, as it only knows how to have a relationship through testing, which was the premise of the original title).

    – Throughout the demo, there’s an amazing combination of imagery with the charred/destroyed labs repairing themselves. A mix of wreckage, clean room/tech lab and jungle footage environments mix together to create a surreal but effective new world to play in.

    – New character: A small personality sphere named Wheatley (complete with a British accent) surfaces as a guide/counterpart within the game. This character has been trapped in the Aperture labs for a long time and looks to escape along with you.

    – The GLaDOS computer returns, embodying an enraged, insane and passive/aggressive cleverness in its interactions with your character.

    – Throughout the demonstration, the game retains its dark but irreverent sense of humor.

    – Certain environments are now destructible, which adds a new dimension to the gameplay.

    – Repulsion Gel: Pour it on a surface and you can sort of use it as a trampoline (blue).

    – Propulsion Gel: Allows for a “fling” effect. (orange)

    – The developers commented that they’re looking to work off the same skill set as Portal 1 without forcing the players to relearn too many basics.

    – Portal 2 itself is that much bigger and more involved than the original (no final level count has been released).

    – Portal 2 can be worked through via a two-player co-op mode, this mode offering a different set of levels.

    – The title will ship next year on Mac OS X, Windows, PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
