Law firm sets up effort to investigate cracks in M1 MacBook screens that may occur following normal use

If your M1 MacBook display has experienced cracks, there might be an investigation shaping up to help resolve the issue.

The law firm of Migliaccio & Rathod LLP has announced an investigation into Apple over reports from users that their M1 MacBook displays have cracked during normal usage.

To this end, a number of users have reported cracks, often accompanied by black bars running across the screen. Some say the cracks appeared after opening the lid without “applying any undue pressure” or even by adjusting the screen angle.

Customers have complained that Apple customer service usually informs users that the culprit is a small item or particle that has lodged between the keyboard and the screen. The same customers have stated that repairs can amount up to $600 “with no guarantee that the screen crack defect won’t reoccur at a later date.”

Users who’ve experienced these issues with their M1 MacBook can contact Migliaccio & Rathod by filling out a questionnaire on their website, sending an email to [email protected] or giving them a call at (202) 470-3520.

  • Rumor: Apple begins mass production of mini LED-based 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks

Rumor: Apple begins mass production of mini LED-based 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks

Per the rumor mill, Apple’s mini LED-equipped 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks have edged closer to launch, with suppliers said to be entering volume production.

Sources have also stated that Apple will be bringing out a version of the MacBook Pro with a mini LED-backlit display, incorporating the technology used in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro screen.

According to supply chain sources cited by DigiTimes, volume production of the new MacBook Pro has commenced. Monthly shipments of the notebooks are anticipated to be between 600,000 and 800,000 units per month between August and November.

Mini LED technology is likely to be beneficial to Mac users as a backlighting system, and consists of thousands of mini LED backlights instead of a smaller number of LEDs. Through this, Apple can have more control over the backlight’s illumination patterns, enabling contrast ratios of up to 1 million to 1, better HDR support, and improved color representation.

The start of volume production in August also coincides with Apple’s usual fall product launches, which generally arrive a few months after production commences.

Depending on the rumors, Apple is believed to be bringing out a 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro before the end of 2021. Along with mini LED backlighting, the models could include features like an M1 or M1X chip, an improved 1080p webcam, MagSafe, and even a return of previously-removed ports.

  • Rumor: Next-gen MacBook Pro notebooks could feature SD card slot with UHS-II support, could be limited to 32GB of RAM

Rumor: Next-gen MacBook Pro notebooks could feature SD card slot with UHS-II support, could be limited to 32GB of RAM

Because the rumor mill never rests, there’s word as to Apple’s forthcoming Apple Silicon MacBook Pro notebooks. Per noted YouTuber Luke Miani, the updated notebooks will feature an SD card slot with high-speed UHS-II support and an illuminated Touch ID button for the first time, but could limited to 32GB of RAM.

This marks an interesting change, as Apple would be bringing back the SD card slot for the first time since 2015, with Miani citing that the new SD card slot would offer UHS-II support.

UHS-II offers a notable boost in speeds, reaching as high as 312mb/s, compared to 100mb/s with traditional SD card slots. The design is backward compatible so that you can use UHS-I cards as well. A variety of companies have already released powerful UHS-II SD cards, including SanDisk and others.

    Miani offered the following explanation:

Adding UHS-II to the MacBook Pro will be a huge upgrade to video editors and photographers – you know, the people who really want SD card slots! It’s been great to hear in multiple reports that the SD Card slot is making a comeback, but to have this additional high-speed capability is great news.

Miani also claimed that the updated MacBook Pros would offer an illuminated and backlit Touch ID button for the first time ever. While details as to this are a bit thin, the rumor says the Touch ID button will be backlit by “multiple dedicated LEDs.”

Finally, Miani reported that the updated MacBook Pro notebooks might be limited to 32GB of RAM. This contradicts previous reports that stated the notebooks could be configured with up to 64GB of RAM. The current M1 Macs are limited to 16GB of RAM.

Miani’s track record in Apple rumors is mixed. He incorrectly said that AirPods 3 would launch in May, but he was partially correct that Apple Music HiFi would launch on May 17/18.

  • Rumor: Apple to release redesigned iMac in 2021

Everything changes eventually, and Apple is rumored to be planning a significant redesign to its iMac desktop computer. The move would mark the first major change to the system since its 2012 conversion to the “slim” design that has become ubiquitous today.

It’s that the the new design would be similar to the Apple’s Pro Display XDR with thinner bezels and the removal of the “chin” on the bottom. Two versions codenamed J456 and J457 would replace the existing 21.5-inch and 27-inch displays later in 2021.

The rumor comes on the heels of whispers of a redesign of the 2021 MacBook Pro notebooks, which would offer flat sides, MagSafe and the removal of the Touch Bar in 14-inch and 16-inch models.
