  • Google Chrome zero-day exploit patch released for Mac and Windows users

Google Chrome zero-day exploit patch released for Mac and Windows users

It might be time to update your copy of Google Chrome for your Mac or Windows machines and partitions.

Google Chrome 105.0.5195.102 was released on September 2, and contains a fix for an exploit actively being used against Mac and Windows users.

The update fixes a high-risk security flaw that patches a dangerous zero-day bug. This is the sixth zero-day exploit that the company patched thus far in 2022.

Reported anonymously, CVE-2022-3075 is a vulnerability caused by insufficient data validation in Mojo. Mojo is a collection of runtime libraries that facilitates message passing across arbitrary inter- and intra-process boundaries.

Google’s website doesn’t offer details of the exploit, and the company has stated that there are reports that the flaw has been exploited by attackers in the wild.

“Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix,” the company said. “We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed.”

Mac users can update the Google Chrome browser automatically by pressing Command-Q to quit the browser, then reopening the app. If the browser hasn’t been closed in a while, a button will appear in the upper-right corner of the app that says Update.

To update your version of Chrome, go into the Chrome menu, select Help and then About Google Chrome will display the update status of the browser. From here, it should download and install the new update.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Apple acknowledges permissions-based error in accessing some scanners under macOS Big Sur, states that fix has been planned

Apple acknowledges permissions-based error in accessing some scanners under macOS Big Sur, states that fix has been planned

Via a newly published Apple support document, the company has acknowledged an error that some users may receive when they try to use a scanner with a Mac in the Image Capture app, Preview app, or the Printers & Scanners section of System Preferences.

To this end, a number of users have cited receiving a permissions-based error message when attempting to open the application, followed by the name of the scanner driver. The message says to contact a computer or network administrator for assistance, or indicates that the Mac failed to open a connection to the device.

The error message starts with: “You do not have permission to open the application.”

The error message seems to be prevalent on multiple versions of macOS Big Sur.

Apple said this issue is expected to be resolved in a future software update, but no time frame was given. In the meantime, the support document provides step-by-step instructions on how to temporarily resolve the issue:

    1. Quit any apps that are open.
    2. From the menu bar in the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
    3. Type /Library/Image Capture/Devices, then press Return.
    4. In the window that opens, double-click the app named in the error message. It’s the name of your scanner driver. Nothing should happen when you open it.
    5. Close the window and open the app you were using to scan. A new scan should proceed normally. If you later choose to scan from a different app and get the same error, repeat these steps.

Please let us know if you’ve seen this error on your end, and we’ll have additional details as they become available.

  • SpamSieve updated to 2.9.9

    SpamSieve’s about ready for Mavericks.

Michael Tsai’s must-have shareware program, SpamSieve, has just been updated to version 2.9.9. The new version, a 10.8 megabyte download, adds the following fixes and changes:
    – SpamSieve is now compatible with the GM build of OS X 10.9 Mavericks. It is recommended that you update to SpamSieve 2.9.9 before installing Mavericks. If you’ve updated to Mavericks first, and you don’t see the SpamSieve commands in Apple Mail’s Message menu, be sure to choose Install Apple Mail Plug-In from the SpamSieve menu.

    – Made various changes to improve SpamSieve’s filtering accuracy.

    – Microsoft Outlook 2011’s notification sounds are now available in SpamSieve’s Notification preferences.

    – Added the Apple Mail – Server Junk Mailbox script. When it’s not possible to turn off a server-side junk filter (e.g., iCloud’s), this lets SpamSieve save you from mistakes that the server junk filter made by moving any messages that SpamSieve thinks are good back to the inbox. It will also consolidate the spam messages from all the accounts into a single spam mailbox (the same one where SpamSieve is already putting your spam).

    – Can now repair the ownership and permissions of the SpamSieve and Apple Mail preferences files if needed. This fixes problems where SpamSieve would lose its registration information or Apple Mail wouldn’t show the SpamSieve menu commands.

    – Fixed some problems where the Open Window command in Apple Mail was not available or did not always open the specified window.

SpamSieve 2.9.9 retails for US$30.00 and requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later to install and run.
