  • HDMI 2.1 specs published, highlight improved HDR, resolutions up to 10K

    It’s a bit down the line, but the HDMI Forum’s details for the HDMI 2.1 spec, which were released today, look pretty nifty.

    The big takeaways include higher resolution, Dynamic HDR and the additions of support for high frame rate 4K and 8K video. HDMI 2.1 will work with 8K video at refresh rates up to 60 Hz, along with 4K video up to 120 Hz.

    The new spec could enable higher frame rates for gamers as well as higher resolution video from high-end cameras as well as the ability to display at maximum quality.

  • iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus announced at Apple press event

    The iPhone 8 you’ve been hankering for has just been announced.

    Over at Apple’s media event, the company announced the 4.7-inch iPhone 8 and the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus handsets. Both models feature LCD displays and incorporate Apple’s new six-core A11 Bionic processor.

    The A11 processor features two high-performance cores said to be 25 percent faster than the A10, and four high-efficiency cores that are 70 percent faster. An Apple-designed GPU is said to deliver a 30 percent speed boost. Also attached is a new image signal processor, providing faster autofocus in low light, improved pixel processing, and better noise reduction.

  • Rumor: Next-gen iPhone could be delayed until Q1 2018, might not be available in white color, facial recognition “highly likely”

    With the launch of the next-gen iPhone en route, a rumor from Macotakara cites possible delays and initial supply shortages of the handset. The report explains that the “premium model” will likely be unveiled alongside the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, but its release will likely be delayed to near the end of 2017.

    The report states that the release “has the possibility” of slipping to the first half of Apple’s Q1 2018, which runs from October through December.

    It’s also been rumored that the next-gen iPhone will not arrive in a white color option. While the specifics of this rumor are unclear, sources close to the early production line have said that it is “not possible” to have the new iPhone arrive in white, thereby suggesting less of a color variety than with previous models.

  • J.P. Morgan analyst predicts September launch for next-gen iPhone, units to be available in lower quantities

    He’s straying from the pack a bit, but analyst Rod Hall of J.P. Morgan has offered a statement predicting that Apple will continue to support the concept of a “super cycle” after the “iPhone 7s” family and “iPhone 8” launch. However, because of possible OLED screen issues related to Touch ID, launch quantities will likely be constrained.

    The original J.P. Morgan estimates had predicted that Apple would have 9 million “iPhone 8” units available for launch and for sale before the end of September. Instead, Hall has predicted that the actual number is now closer to 2 million because of unspecified production problems, and has shifted quarterly unit forecasts accordingly.

  • Rumor: Next-gen iPhones may not feature inductive charging upon release

    Apple’s 2017 iPhone models might not feature inductive charging after all.

    Per a tweet by Mac guru John Gruber, a tipster has indicated that that the new charging technology “might be late” and not launch until iOS 11.1 is released.

    Gruber has likened the delay of wireless charging to the delay of Portrait Mode on the iPhone 7 plus. While Apple demonstrated Portrait Mode when the handset was being unveiled, the feature wasn’t made available to the public until iOS 10.1, a month after the device’s release.
