  • Beginning Friday, November 5th, some U.S. Apple Store locations to drop mask requirement for customers

Beginning Friday, November 5th, some U.S. Apple Store locations to drop mask requirement for customers

Per a note intercepted by Bloomberg, Apple on Friday will drop the pandemic mask mandate for more than 100 of its 270+ Apple Store retail locations in the United States following positive trends in vaccinations and declining COVID-19 cases.

The intra-company note reads as follows:

After careful review, the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, along with leadership, have determined it’s safe to update our guidance on masks for customers in your store. The positive trends in vaccinations, testing, and case counts for your area have made this change possible.

Customers will be able to enter Apple retail locations vaccinated or unvaccinated, and Apple will not require proof of vaccination. In areas like Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area where mask wearing is still mandated, masks will still need to be worn in Apple Stores.

While Apple is dropping mask mandates for customers in some areas, Apple Store employees will still be required to wear masks at this time.

Apple says that it plans to continue to monitor local guidance and COVID data throughout the holiday season, making adjustments as required.

  • Apple releases COVID-19 app update, offers fixes, changes based on CDC guidance

Apple on Thursday released a substantial updated to its COVID-19 app and website, including both bug fixes and significant new information.

Updates include new recommendations for healthcare workers to align with CDC guidelines, best practices for quarantining if you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, and new information for pregnancy and newborns.

As of April, Apple responded to a letter from several Democratic senators who had inquired as to the data protection and privacy policies of the COVID-19 app and screening tools.

Apple stated that it doesn’t collect any information other than non-personally identifiable app usage and crash data. That data is then kept only as long as necessary to “support the operation of the COVID-19 website and app.” It also pledged not to share or resell any data collected with third parties or for commercial purposes.

Apple’s COVID-19 app requires iOS 13.1 or later to install and run and is available for free.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Iran may begin allowing iPhone imports, timeline for this yet to be be announced

It looks like the iPhone may finally be coming to Iran.

The local media has reported that Iran is preparing to allow local retailers to import iPhones legally for the first time. Just last month, the country was threatening to ban the devices in what it was calling an anti-smuggling move. All that threat did in turn, however, was drive up the price of iPhones already in the country and actually increase smuggling.

The nation’s trade industry has requested licenses from the Traded Promoted Organization and requested licenses for nine Iranian companies to import the iPhone. Apple does not have any kind of presence within Iran itself, so this is a bit strange.
