Rumor: Apple to debut 27-inch “iMac Pro” in spring 2022

Per noted display analyst Ross Young, Apple’s eagerly-awaited larger-screened “iMac Pro” is expected to launch next spring.

Young says that the new ‌iMac‌ is “expected in the spring,” with spring in the Northern Hemisphere starting on March 20 and ending on June 21. Apple often holds an event in the spring, so customers could perhaps see the new ‌iMac‌ come out at the annual spring event.

While there have been recent rumors of an iMac with a display larger than 27 inches, more recent information, including that provided by Young, has pointed towards Apple maintaining the 27-inch display. It’s also rumored that the unit will use a mini-LED display similar to the MacBook Pro, and it will feature support for 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates.

It’s also thought that the new iMac would be named the “iMac Pro,” which would both differentiate it from the 24-inch ‌iMac‌ and put it on par with the MacBook Pro machines. The new 27-inch iMacs are expected to use the same M1 Pro and M1 Max chips as the 2021 MacBook Pro models.

As of now, prices for Apple’s mini-LED panels are more expensive than similar OLED panels, but the adoption of OLED vs. the continued adoption of mini-LED will depend on how fast mini-LED prices drop. Young says that pricing differences “will be critical” in the “OLED vs. mini-LED battle.”

  • Leaked screenshots indicate iPhone 12 Pro Max could feature 120Hz Display, LiDAR Functionality

According to screenshots leaked by noted leaker John Prosser, a test model of the upcoming 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max indicates that the handset could feature a 120Hz display as well as a LiDAR scanner.

The screenshots are said to be from a PVT (Production Validation Test) model of the handset, and featured settings include a toggle to enable “LiDAR” for “assisted auto focus and subject detection for Video and Night Mode.”

The menu also includes an option to “Enable High Refresh Rate” and “Enable Adaptive Refresh Rate.” An addition setting also says “the device will alter the refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz in accordance to the content displayed on-screen.”

There have been a number of mixed rumors as to whether the iPhone 12 will offer 120Hz ProMotion technology, and display analyst Ross Young noted that Apple is facing supply chain issues with the 120Hz display driver ICs for the iPhone 12 Pro. It’s thought that Apple may opt to ship with 60Hz displays or delay the launch of the ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro models.

Prosser claims that some of the 6.7-inch PVT ‌iPhone‌ models are equipped with 120Hz displays and some are not, and the alleged settings screenshots do mention the existence of both.

Additional rumors have suggested that the iPhone 12 Pro units will feature a LiDAR scanner similar to the unit offered on the 2020 iPad Pro models.

It’s unknown as to how valid the leaked screenshots are, especially considering some questionable wording in the images, as well as unusual spelling, capitalization, and wording that Apple typically doesn’t use. Prosser has offered an explanation by suggesting the wording here is “written for people testing the units,” which can’t be confirmed.
