  • Apple adds 3D City View, enhanced navigation features for Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver

Apple adds 3D City View, enhanced navigation features for Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver

Apple’s 3D City View feature within its Maps app continues to progress, and it’s nifty.

Apple on Thursday announced that its Apple Maps application now offers 3D City View and enhanced navigation in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Some of the 3D landmarks that Canadians will see include Biosphere in Montreal, City Hall of Toronto, and BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The features were already available in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and London.

Aside from the 3D landmarks, Apple Maps now have more road details to help Canadian drivers navigate cities easily. Apple Maps will display turn lanes, medians, bus, and taxi lanes and crosswalks more clearly than before. This will make it easier to navigate busy intersections.

New pedestrian-focused features include better immersive walking directions that use augmented reality, enhanced traffic updates, cycling directions, and curated guides.

Where privacy is concerned, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior Vice President of services, offered the following:

Any data collected by Maps while using the app, including search terms, navigation routing, and traffic information, is associated with random identifiers that regularly reset to prevent connecting search and location data stored on the server to a unique user.

If you live in Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver and have seen these new features, please let us know in the comments.

  • Apple announces new and upcoming 3D content for Apple Maps

Apple announces new and upcoming 3D content for Apple Maps

This could definitely help you find your way around the monuments the next time you visit the nation’s capital.

On Thursday, Apple announced that a new 3D map of Washington, D.C. in the Apple Maps app will allow users to explore the city’s landmarks and memorials, such as the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The new mapping experience does not appear to be visible yet, but it likely will be soon.

Alongside the launch of iOS 15 in September, Apple Maps gained a new 3D maps feature, which offers more detail and custom-designed landmarks in select cities, including Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and London. Apple said the 3D maps would be rolled out to additional cities later this year, including Philadelphia, San Diego, and Washington, D.C., and Apple previewed the feature in Washington, D.C. Thursday in honor of Veterans Day.

The company also announced that it is honoring Veterans Day with special content in the App Store, Apple Books app, Apple TV app, and more. Users can also find a Veterans Day-themed Activity Challenge that Apple Watch users in the U.S. can complete by recording any workout for 11 minutes or longer today with the Workout app or any app that adds workouts to the Health app.

  • Beginning Friday, November 5th, some U.S. Apple Store locations to drop mask requirement for customers

Beginning Friday, November 5th, some U.S. Apple Store locations to drop mask requirement for customers

Per a note intercepted by Bloomberg, Apple on Friday will drop the pandemic mask mandate for more than 100 of its 270+ Apple Store retail locations in the United States following positive trends in vaccinations and declining COVID-19 cases.

The intra-company note reads as follows:

After careful review, the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) team, along with leadership, have determined it’s safe to update our guidance on masks for customers in your store. The positive trends in vaccinations, testing, and case counts for your area have made this change possible.

Customers will be able to enter Apple retail locations vaccinated or unvaccinated, and Apple will not require proof of vaccination. In areas like Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area where mask wearing is still mandated, masks will still need to be worn in Apple Stores.

While Apple is dropping mask mandates for customers in some areas, Apple Store employees will still be required to wear masks at this time.

Apple says that it plans to continue to monitor local guidance and COVID data throughout the holiday season, making adjustments as required.
