  • Rumor: iPhone 17 Air could use different design element for the placement of its USB-C port

Rumor: iPhone 17 Air could use different design element for the placement of its USB-C port

Following up on rumors that Apple is prepping the launch of a dramatically different iPhone handset with the iPhone 17 Air this September, the device is said to be just 5.5mm thick (excluding a slightly raised camera bump), making the 6.6-inch iPhone 17 Air the slimmest iPhone in the lineup by some margin. For comparison, the current iPhone 16 Pro measures 8.25mm thick.

According to AppleTrack, dummy models of the iPhone 17 handsets show subtle adjustments to accommodate internal components in the tighter chassis. Most notably, the USB-C port on the bottom edge is no longer centered front-to-back. Instead, it appears shifted closer to the rear of the device, which is likely to accommodate display components within the enclosure.

Other differences are said to include the iPhone 17 Air’s speaker grilles, which show a pared-back design with only two holes on either side, as opposed to the typical five. The reduction is thought to be part of space-saving measures to make room for a battery, processor, display components, and speakers within a much slimmer frame.

To save even more space, Apple is said to be equipping the iPhone 17 Air with a single rear camera. The company is also expected to remove the physical SIM card slot entirely, adopting eSIM-only support globally – a shift first seen in U.S. iPhones with the iPhone 14.

The iPhone 17 Air is also said to include Apple’s new C1 modem, which debuted with the iPhone 16e. The C1 is said to play a big role in helping to maintain battery life in such a thin frame.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series during its usual fall event, which may also see the debut of third-generation AirPods Pro.

  • Rumor: Next-generation iPhone SE could borrow some design features from the iPhone XR

Rumor: Next-generation iPhone SE could borrow some design features from the iPhone XR

Per recent rumors, the next-generation iPhone SE could feature a design based around the iPhone XR.

The rumor comes from known leaker Jon Prosser, who has cited new information from his sources.

Within the latest episode of the Geared Up podcast featuring Andru Edwards and Jon Rettinger, Prosser claims that, “The SE 4, from what I understand – and I don’t think I’ve said this publicly – is just the iPhone XR”.

The current, third-generation iPhone SE saw a release earlier this year, and is based on the iPhone 8 as well as the previous iPhone SE. The current iPhone SE features thick top and bottom display bezels, which differs from Apple’s other iPhones. It also features a Home button, which is sometimes seen as a missed feature on the flagship series of iPhones.

Apple no longer lists the iPhone XR within its stores. The XR features a 6.1-inch LCD display, as opposed to the current iPhone SE’s 4.7-inch display. A conversion to an iPhone XR set of features may portend a larger display for the next-generation iPhone SE.

  • iPhone case hints at thicker, rounder design for upcoming low-cost iPhone

Sometimes the upcoming case designs give it away.

Per AppleInsider and Macotakara, case makers in the Far East have begun to produce accessories they hope will fit a new low-cost iPhone model from Apple, featuring a slightly thicker design and rounded edges.

The appearance of a case alleged to fit a new iPhone would suggest that schematics for such a device, legitimate or not, are in the wild.

The case designed by Japan’s MGM Corp. shows rounded edges, and a slightly thicker frame than the iPhone 5. It includes space for a rear-facing camera with flash, as well as volume buttons and mute switch on the left side.

According to the report, the case for the low-cost iPhone is about 2 millimeters thicker than a similar accessory designed for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 case also has squared off edges, while the low-cost iPhone case has rounded sides.

Rumors have persisted throughout 2013 that Apple plans to build a new, low-end iPhone model that could be used to target customers who prefer not to sign a new service contract. Currently Apple does not serve the low end of the smartphone market, where the most industry growth is being seen.

In recent weeks, reports have claimed that suppliers are now shipping parts for such a device. One alleged part claimed to show a plastic rear shell with rounded corners allegedly intended for the device.

Market watchers believe Apple could sell a low-cost iPhone for US$399 without negatively affecting the company’s margins. It’s also been suggested the device will be available in an array of colors, taking a cue from the company’s iPod lineup.
