Unpacking Apple’s ‘We’re working on your order’ email

We’re not sure what they mean yet, but Apple just sent out an email that says “We’re working on your order” to many people that pre-ordered an Apple Watch.

The email’s subject line begins with “Your Apple Watch Order” followed by your order number and looks like this:

Apple Store email: "We're working on your order" - Jason O'Grady

I received the email above at 8:02 p.m. PT this evening, but there’s no rhyme or reason to it, unless it means bad news.

I ordered three Apple watches on April 10 and haven’t received an email for the earliest two orders:

  • 42mm Sport (Space Gray) – ordered at 12:11 am – status: “Processing Items”
  • 38mm Sport (White) – ordered at 12:12 a.m. – status: “Preparing for Shipment”

The email above is for a 42mm Stainless Steel Case with Black Classic Buckle that I ordered more than 20 minutes later – at 12:33 a.m. – that’s still marked “Processing Items.” Go figure.

It could mean that my stainless steel Apple Watch won’t be arriving on Friday. Or that it will.

A theory floating around Twitter is that Apple may be sending the “We’re working on your order” emails as a consolation prize to people that won’t be getting their Apple watches on Friday. I don’t understand why I got an email for my 12:33 a.m. “Processing Items” stainless steel watch order, but not for the other two, which were ordered 20 minutes earlier (unless it’s a stainless steel thing).

We’ll know more when Apple starts sending shipping confirmation emails, which should start going out in the next 24 hours. In the mean time, your guess is as good as mine.

Did you receive an email? When/what did you order?
