The lads at MacUpdate and Koingo Software have announced that they will be making copies of Koingo’s AirRadar 1.1.7 wireless network scanning software available for free.
AirRadar, which normally retails for US$10, allows users to scan for open networks and tag them as favorites or filter them out. Users can also view detailed network information, graph network signal strength, and automatically join the best open network in range.
The application also delivers other information, including encryption status, encryption type, encryption cipher, router MAC address, first and last seen date and time, noise level, and vendor information.
AirRadar 1.1.7 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run and can be downloaded from here.

It’s Memorial Day, the beginning of summer and we here at PowerPage will be taking the day off to spend it with friends and family.
And the barbecue.
Definitely the barbecue.
That being said, yank yourself away from your Mac for today, see if you can get some people over, drop in a few briquettes and have a good time this weekend!!!
(And yes, you can drop back into geek mode and discuss iPhone OS 3.0 features while grilling…)

PowerPage Forums Return

mbpro.2jpg.jpg
After a fairly long hiatus, the PowerPage forums have officially returned and are up and running.
Once again, you can discuss all things Apple, Mac, portable, software, iBook, iPod, iPhone, hardware, mods, hacks, fixes, workarounds, opinions and whatever else is on your mind. The forum also features a buy and sell section as well as a stolen laptop registry where you can submit the information for a stolen Mac laptop that might have gone missing and hopefully the PowerPage community will be able to help out.
If you’re going to participate, there are a few rules to follow. PowerPage has existed as a community for 12 years now and is based on an interest in the Mac, mobile technologies and where all this is headed. You guys have always piped up with a comment, idea, suggestion or opinion and that’s kept things going. Still, it only takes a few jerks to ruin a conversation, so be warned that the forums will be monitored and anything severely off-topic, insulting to another user or smacking of spam will receive no more than one warning before being banned.
The goal isn’t to establish anything authoritarian or too tightly controlled, but something that can be participated in and enjoyed by everyone as well as serve as a great resource created by a community that’s interested in something and has suggestions as to how to make a good thing better.
So, without further ado, the forums are open and waiting.
Have at it.

Announcement: Joost Offer Continues

You people are demented.
And that’s a good thing.
We’re now at 245 requests for Joost invitations and if you haven’t gotten yours yet, I’ll get it out as soon as I can today.
For the time being, if you’d still like an invitation, let me know via the comments (don’t post your e-mail in the comment itself, as spam-bots like to collect addresses where possible and usually use publicly viewed fields like this). The only proviso is that Joost only runs on Apple’s current Intel-based hardware, so if you have an older machine, you might have to borrow a friend’s Mac to try it out.
If you’ve gotten the Joost invitation and had a chance to play with it, feel free to chip in your two cents.

Folks, a friend saw fit to invite me to Joost and with the new beta in process, users have unlimited invitations.
If any of you want in, contact me via the comments and I’ll see that you’re taken care of.
No repayment is necessary, but if someone out there is in a position to make sure that Paris Hilton is deployed into deep orbit with only 20 minutes of oxygen and a Rubik’s Cube for company, that’s all I ask.
Update: Guys, you probably shouldn’t put your e-mail in the body of the comment. We here at PowerPage aren’t in the spam business and don’t harvest your e-mails, but various spam bots do. Just be careful about it and it should save a few headaches down the road!

Mac Pros will be available immediately with a free upgrade to 10.5 when it ships, and the ship date for 10.5 will be confirmed for 3/24/07 as we have been predicting for quite some time now.

After weeks of rumors, speculation and build-up regarding the possibility of an Apple iPhone and finally a due date of Monday for an announcement, we finally received news of an iPhone – from Linksys.
Needless to say, more than a few people were disappointed.

I also promised to buy readers an ice cream sundae if Apple didn’t announce an iPhone device yesterday and it’s time to face up to this. Come Macworld Expo San Francisco, we’ll be combining the annual PowerPage photo with a Monday night migration out to an ice cream shop near the Moscone Center that PowerPage editor Jason O’Grady mentions as serving an extremely decent sundae.
We’re shooting for a time on January 8th and further details will be published as they become available.
