  • Apple announces updated iPad Air, iPad mini units, will go on sale this Friday

The new iPads were announced today.

And it looks like there’s some good stuff coming your way at a decent price.

Apple has bolstered the low end of its iPad lineup and discontinued the iPad Air 2. In its place is a new model that looks exactly the same, with a 9.7-inch retina screen, Touch ID, 32GB or 128GB of storage, and the same color choices (silver, gold, and space gray). The tablet sports an A9 processor identical to the one found in the iPhone 6s and the usual 10-hour battery. That’s a relatively small upgrade over the 8X chip that was in the iPad Air 2, but the price for the entry-level iPad has dropped from $399 to $299, which was once the price of the iPad mini.

  • AT&T discontinues 2G network, ends cellular connectivity for first-gen iPhone

It’s time to move on where AT&T, the first-gen iPhone and cellular service are concerned.

On Monday, AT&T announced that its 2G wireless network was officially shut down on January 1, 2017, following four years of planning for its discontinuation.

This means that the 2G network available to the original first-gen iPhone will no longer receive cellular service from the AT&T network.

  • Apple announces Apple Watch Series 2, pre-orders to begin September 9th

    applewatch2

Apple took the wrapping off the second-gen Apple Watch today during its media event.

The new unit, dubbed the “Apple Watch Series 2”, boasts a dual-core processor, a brighter display, swim-proof capabilities and built-in GPS. This new model has a redesigned speaker to make it water-resistant down to 50 meters. Other than that, this updated smartwatch looks near-identical to the first Apple Watch, now known as Apple Watch Series 1, which was only splash-proof.

Unfortunately, the new unit lacks the much-anticipated cellular connectivity, meaning you’ll still need to pair it to an iPhone for data-heavy operations and calls.

    attlogosmall

This is a pretty neat idea.

Communications companies Qualcomm and AT&T today announced plans to start testing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, also known as drones) on cellular networks later this month. The goal is to analyze how drones can operate safely and more securely on commercial 4G LTE and future networks such as 5G.

The trials will take place at Qualcomm’s UAS Flight Center in San Diego, where engineers will work to mimic commercial, residential and uninhabited areas.
