  • Rumor: Apple to adopt micro-LED displays for Apple Watch units in second half of 2017

    applewatchface

Apple may opt for micro-LED displays come the second half of 2017.

Sources within the supply chain have suggested that that the much-rumored Apple Watch 2 lineup expected to debut in the second half of 2016 will continue to have OLED displays, with the move towards micro-LED panels liking occurring in tandem with the tentatively named Apple Watch 3.

Micro-LED displays can be thinner and lighter and allow for improved color gamut, increased brightness, and higher resolutions. The panels do not require backlighting like traditional LCD displays, but they can be difficult and expensive to mass produce. Micro LEDs range in size from 1-micron to 100-micron.

This could lead to an absolutely amazing display.

In a recently published patent application, Apple describes a technology that could reduce image artifacts in high dynamic range (HDR) dual-layer LCDs, technology that could theoretically boost a typical display’s contrast ratio to 1,000,000 to 1.

In its “Devices and methods of image-splitting for dual-layer high dynamic range displays” application, published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Apple touts the optical benefits of dual-layer LCD systems, specifically the ability to reproduce high contrast imagery.

    iphone6slineup

The rumor mill is acting up with new claims that next-gen iPhones will switch over to OLED displays.

The current word around the camp fire is that LG and Samsung Display are close to a final agreement with Apple for the screens, adding the two Korean firms plan a combined 15 trillion won ($12.8 billion) in capital expenditure to build up OLED production capacity over the next two to three years.

Last month’s claims stated that Apple planned to switch over to OLED screens for the iPhone beginning in 2018, a move that suggests that Apple would stick with LCD units for the iPhone 7 model.
