  • Apple releases Mac OS X 10.7.3 beta, focuses on iCloud storage features

Apple on Tuesday began widespread testing of Mac OS X 10.7.3, the third maintenance update to its relatively new Lion operating system that will improve upon iCloud’s Documents in the Cloud, among a handful of other areas.

Per AppleInsider, sources familiar with the first external build of the forthcoming update — labeled OS X Lion 10.7.3 build 11D16 — say the company has requested developers to focus their evaluation efforts on iCal calendars, Mail, AddressBook and iCloud’s document storage.

The 633MB delta update is reported to have no known issues at this time. It was accompanied by a pre-release copy of OS X Lion Server 10.7.3 that carried the same build number and set of focus areas.

Apple last updated Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in mid-October when it released Mac OS X 10.7.2, which delivered initial Mac support for iCloud.

  • Apple releases iOS 5 golden master, updated Mac OS X 10.7.2 build to developer community

Amidst yesterday’s hubbub about the iPhone 4S, Apple on Tuesday issued the golden master build of iOS 5 to members of its development community, along with a new build of Mac OS X 10.7.2.

Per AppleInsider, sources close to the story said the golden master build of iOS 5 is known as “Build 9A334”. It is said to be labeled as a GM, or golden master, seed, which means that it is likely to be identical to the final version of the software Apple will release to the public.

Those people said there are a handful of fixes contained in the golden master build. For example, the GM build of iOS 5 reportedly fixes an issue that existed when deleting a song or video from the Music and Videos applications on an iOS device, causing it to crash.

Developers are also notified that starting with iOS 5, AirPlay is enabled by default for video content available on applications and websites. Those with access to the golden master have also been advised that the WebKit framework in the latest build more closely matches the engine used in Apple’s Safari 5.1 desktop Web browser.

iOS 5 will be released to the public next Wednesday, Oct. 12. It will be compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, first-generation iPad, fourth-generation iPod touch, and third-generation iPod touch.

On Wednesday Apple released a new build of Mac OS X 10.7.2, known as “Build 11C73”. It is said to not contain any known issues. The forthcoming update to Lion will add support for iCloud.

  • MobileMe users report outages prior to iCloud transition and launch

Regarding the iCloud…it’s en route, even if there are some transitional bumps in the road to be had.

Per AppleInsider, numerous MobileMe users reported experiencing outages of Apple’s current cloud service on Thursday, even as the fall launch of iCloud looms.

Users noted that they were unable to access MobileMe Mail. Apple’s system status page for its web service currently states that 25 percent of members may be unable to access MobileMe Mail, and some members may be unable to access www.me.com web apps and Find My iPhone. All other MobileMe services are listed as “online and fully operational.”

MacRumors noted that Apple late Thursday had cautioned on its status page that as many 75 percent of MobileMe Mail users might be experiencing problems.

MobileMe is, at this point, a ‘lame duck’ service, as it is scheduled to shut down on June 30, 2012. Apple plans to move existing members over to its upcoming iCloud service, a complete reworking of the company’s cloud-based offerings.

But, Apple has indicated that it will eliminate some of MobileMe’s less-used features, such as iDisk, MobileMe Gallery and iWeb publishing. After receiving customer complaints about lost functionality from the switch, Apple said it was open to considering adding back features “if there’s enough feedback on the subject.”

The company is expected to announce a release date for iCloud next week’s media event to unveil a new iPhone, as it’s unlikely that Apple would launch the fifth-generation iPhone without iCloud. Currently, the service is in a limited beta test.

Last week, the company released a developer build of Mac OS X 10.7.2 with iCloud integrated. Developer accounts have had their iCloud data wiped in preparation for an imminent launch of the service.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
