  • Apple’s $29 battery replacement program ends in December

More a handy reminder than anything else, Apple’s battery replacement program, which replaced certain iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s batteries for $29 and began last year, ends in December 2018.

Some Apple customers with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s models were having battery issues. To address this, Apple reduced the price of out-of-warranty battery placements to US$29. That program ends in December, so if you haven’t replaced your battery yet, do so soon.

  • Apple launches repair program for iPhone 7 units affected by the “No Service” bug

    This might help you out.

Apple on Friday launched a repair program for iPhone 7 devices that are impacted by an ongoing bug that causes them to have no available service even when cellular coverage is available. Apple says the problem is caused by a component that has failed on the main logic board.

The company has stated that the issue affects “a small percentage” of iPhone 7 devices and causes them to display a “No Service” message instead of properly connecting to an available cellular network.

  • Apple offering newer MacBook Pro models as replacements for some 2012, 2013 MacBook Pro models requiring battery replacement

    This could be pretty nifty.

In the wake of what appears to be a severe constraint of top case assemblies with integrated batteries, Apple has informed its Genius Bar employees and Apple Authorized Service Providers it is currently unable to service the batteries of 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display models released in Mid 2012 and Early 2013.

The battery replacement is typically free of charge with an AppleCare+ plan, but can retail for $199 in the United States, £199 in the UK, or $259 in Canada for out-of-warranty replacements.

According to Apple’s internal directive, top case assemblies with batteries for the aforementioned MacBook Pro models will remain severely constrained until September 15, 2017. The directive does not identify a reason for the shortage, which has been ongoing since at least March.

  • Apple shuts down Repair Extension Program for 2011 MacBook Pro notebooks with GPU-based issues

The bad news: Apple is no longer offering extended support for its 2011 MacBook Pro notebooks via its Repair Extension Program for Video Issues.

A group of updated support documents point out that Apple is still covering 15-inch Retina models of the Pro from 2012 and 2013, as long as they were bought less than four years ago. The program was slated to end on December 31st, 2016, although Apple has kept it in effect for users within a four-year window.

Apple first launched the Repair Extension Program for Video Issues in February of 2015. The program addressed what the company claimed was a “small percentage” of Pros with absent or distorted video, or prone to sudden reboots. Problems came to light as far back as 2013, however.
