  • Apple Pay, Express Transit support arrive for Japan’s PASMO system

If you’re en route to Japan, this will come in handy.

The Japanese smart payment system, known as “PASMO,” announced support for Apple Pay on Tuesday, allowing users to pay for transit fares and other transactions with their iPhone or Apple Watch. The Express Transit protocol is also supported, allowing users to quickly pass through transit gates without having to wake, unlock, or activate their devices via Face ID or Touch ID.

PASMO is similar to and interoperable with Suica, a transit system that has been compatible with Apple Pay and Express Transit mode for several years. PASMO is accepted on a number of train lines and bus lines in numerous areas of Japan, although it is most prevalent in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

If you’ve had a chance to try Apple Pay through PASMO in Japan, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Los Angeles Metro TAP card to support Apple Pay later this year

If you live in and around Los Angeles, this should come in handy.

The Los Angeles Metro on Tuesday confirmed that TAP cards used for public transit throughout the city will work with Apple Pay later this year. The card can then be added to the Wallet app for the iPhone and Apple Watch for quick access to buses and trains throughout LA.

The LA Metro announced last year that it had been working with Apple to add support by the end of 2019, although the work ran long.

Los Angeles has been working to overhaul its TAP system, introducing upgraded fare boxes with real-time data about fares purchased online and developing a new TAP mobile app that allows for payments and TAP account management. The TAP network currently works with 25 transit systems across Los Angeles county.

The full list of transit systems that offer Apple Pay support can be found via the link below, and currently includes Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, New York City, Portland, and more.

  • Apple Pay Express Transit support arrives in 273 additional Chinese cities

This will come in handy if you’re passing through China.

The Apple Pay Express Transit function can now be used in 275 cities throughout China thanks to a partnership between Apple and nationwide transport card provider T-Union.

The service had previously only been available Beijing and Shanghai, where it was integrated with existing local transit cards. It allows users users to put their iPhone in front of a turnstile and go through without having to unlock the device. It also works with Apple Watch.

This is about as convenient as it gets, and it’s cool to see it arriving in a large number of cities.
