Apple Pay, Express Transit support arrive for Japan’s PASMO system

If you’re en route to Japan, this will come in handy.

The Japanese smart payment system, known as “PASMO,” announced support for Apple Pay on Tuesday, allowing users to pay for transit fares and other transactions with their iPhone or Apple Watch. The Express Transit protocol is also supported, allowing users to quickly pass through transit gates without having to wake, unlock, or activate their devices via Face ID or Touch ID.

PASMO is similar to and interoperable with Suica, a transit system that has been compatible with Apple Pay and Express Transit mode for several years. PASMO is accepted on a number of train lines and bus lines in numerous areas of Japan, although it is most prevalent in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

If you’ve had a chance to try Apple Pay through PASMO in Japan, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
