AirPlay 2 support added for macOS, iOS Sonos apps

This is a marriage of two pretty nifty things.

Recently, the Sonos app for macOS and iOS was updated to include Apple’s AirPlay 2 protocol.

The change is perhaps best described via Sonos’ blog:

Last October we shared that we would be bringing Apple AirPlay 2 to Sonos. With AirPlay 2 you can play any sound from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer – including YouTube videos and Netflix movies – on Sonos speakers throughout the house. You will also be able to ask any Siri-enabled device to control Apple Music on Sonos speakers.

We’re making great progress. Today, we’re confirming that newer Sonos speakers like Play:5, Playbase and Sonos One will support AirPlay 2, as will future Sonos products. When you group one of these Airplay-enabled speakers with older Sonos devices, you can bring AirPlay capabilities to your entire Sonos system.

The company stated that while older Sonos systems such as the original Play:1 and Play:3 don’t have the horsepower to support AirPlay 2 content, its newer systems do.

If you’ve had a chance to try AirPlay 2 streaming for the Sonos app for either macOS or iOS and have any feedback, please let us know about your experience in the comments.
