Apple retracts iCloud 12 update for Windows, Chrome extension bug thought to be significant factor

If you use iCloud with Windows, this is sort of a kick in the head.

Apple pulled its iCloud for Windows client update on Tuesday, only a day after releasing its iCloud Passwords for Chrome on Windows extension. While the company has yet to offer a specific explanation for this retraction, it’s thought that issues discovered by users may have lead to the retraction of the update.

The software was initially released to allow for the use of Apple’s Keychain password feature in Google Chrome, enabling saved credentials to be used in the browser within Windows.

As of Tuesday, the update was no longer available for download from the Microsoft Store. Instead, the available version had been rolled back to 11.6.32.0, as opposed to version 12.

For a while the Microsoft Store listing continued to mention the added password functionality, but references have since been removed. The iCloud Passwords Chrome extension is still available to download, but it requires the correct version of iCloud for Windows to function.

One error that was apparently discovered and reported by The 8-Bit suggested that once the Chrome extension was installed, a two-factor authentication code glitched in the bottom-left corner of the browser, appearing regardless of the viewed website. As such, it’s plausible that Apple would want to fix the issues while preventing users from using a buggy and potentially insecure version for the moment, at least until a repaired version is offered.

It’s unknown as to when Apple will rerelease version 12 of the software again.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
