Rumor: iOS 17.1, other software updates expected to arrive today

Following several weeks of beta testing, it’s thought that Apple’s iOS 17.1, iPadOS 17.1, macOS Sonoma 14.1, tvOS 17.1, watchOS 10.1, and HomePod Software 17.1 updates will arrive today around 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, which is when Apple typically releases updates.

Last week, Apple seeded release candidates (RCs) for all of the upcoming software refreshes. Apple usually tests RCs for about a week to make sure there are no device-breaking bugs, and this time around, we’re also clued in on a specific launch date because of an update in France.

Expected changes to iOS 17.1 in France include a feature to reduce the radiation level of iPhone 12 models when they are stationary on a table or another surface, and French regulatory group ANFR two weeks ago confirmed that the iOS 17.1 update is expected to come out “by October 24.” While the update isn’t expected to offer the Journal app yet, it includes new features such as the option to continue large AirDrop transfers over the internet once initiated, so if you’re sending someone files, it allows you to walk away while the transfer is in progress.

Other new features in iOS 17.1 include new options for favoriting Apple Music songs, there are new options for leaving the display on in StandBy mode, and Screen Time should work better across devices. There are also several bug fixes, so if you’ve been having issues with search in the Messages app or persistent images on the new iPhone 15 models, you’re going to want to download the update right away.

For Apple Watch users, the watchOS 10.1 update includes support for NameDrop for quickly sharing contact info with another person, and it adds Double Tap on the latest models. Double Tap allows users to their index finger and thumb together to do things like answer phone calls and bring up the Smart Stack.

The macOS Sonoma update offers a few bug fixes, and if you have an original ‌HomePod‌ or HomePod mini, you’ll be pleased to hear that ‌HomePod‌ 17.1 adds the Enhance Dialogue feature to these devices. When a ‌HomePod‌ is used as an Apple TV speaker, Enhance Dialogue cuts down on background noise and music when there’s speaking so you can better hear what’s being said.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • iOS 17.1 beta notes cite a forthcoming fix for the iPhone 15 display burn-in issue

iOS 17.1 beta notes cite a forthcoming fix for the iPhone 15 display burn-in issue

Following up on yesterday’s iPhone 15 screen burn-in article, a series of release notes for the current iOS 17.1 beta states that the update contains a fix for an issue that might be the cause for the scattered reports of iPhone 15 screen burn-in.

The release notes state that the update “Fixes an issue that may cause display image persistence.”

A month after the iPhone 15 range went on sale, users of the iPhone 15 Pro Max were reporting issues with screen burn-in. Despite the fix, it’s not a widespread problem, and it’s not known whether it also affects the iPhone 15 Pro.

Burn-in issues were part of the bad old days of CRT screens, but have resurfaced to some extent with OLED displays. This often happens after a very long time with the same images being shown on the screen.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Some iPhones randomly shutting down, rebooting at strange intervals, exact cause unknown

Some iPhones randomly shutting down, rebooting at strange intervals, exact cause unknown

Sometimes weird issues just pop up.

A number of users have reported that their iPhones have begun rebooting at strange intervals as well as powering down overnight, sometimes causing alarms to be missed.

It’s not presently known as to what may be causing the issue, which seems to be affecting a wide array of iPhone models, some of them running different versions of iOS. While a concentration of affected units seem to be running iOS 17.0.3, there doesn’t seem to be a consensus as to what the exact cause of the issue is.

The core similarity seems to be that the shutdown occurs overnight when the units are charging. The iPhone will ask the user to enter a passcode, as if completing an update. After further inspection, affected users have also noticed that there are gaps in their battery health charts, as the iPhone had powered off.

Other users have reported about Standby widgets resetting after the iPhone “randomly reboots in the middle of the night.”

Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge the issue with iOS 17.0.3, which arrived on October 4. Apple recently released the third beta for its forthcoming iOS 17.1 update, although it’s unknown as to whether this will resolve the issue.

If you’ve seen this issue on your end, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

  • Some users report iOS 17 failure to activate alarms when scheduled

Some users report iOS 17 failure to activate alarms when scheduled

This is why they write software updates and patches.

Per a thread on Reddit, Severally user complaints have pointed to iPhone alarms failing to go off as scheduled:

Hijacking top comment. Check your battery settings and see if there is a gap during the night. Yesterday a lot of iPhones turned off for a few hours during the night. In my case the phone turned back on 1 minute before the alarm

A number of users also reported having to put in their passcodes in the morning, which could indicate that the iPhone, restarted, or shut off during the middle of the night.

You can tell if your ‌iPhone‌ turned off at night by opening up the Settings app, navigating to Battery, and checking the charging status over the past 24 hours. If there’s a gap, the ‌iPhone‌ was turned off for a period of time.

The problem seems to affect not only iPhone, 15 models, but other devices, suggesting that the issue may be a bug within iOS 17. Not all users are experiencing the shutdown issues, nor does it appear to be happening every night.

It is not yet clear what is going on, and Apple has not commented.
