Full guide to reverting to a previous version of macOS posted

There are a number of reasons why you might want to revert to an older version of macOS than the one you might have installed on your Mac, including compatibility with older software, or comfort with the previous interface.

The mighty Chip Loder of AppleInsider has penned an extensive guide as to how to revert back to a previous version of macOS in a pinch, including using standalone installers from Apple’s support website, and how to manually dig through system and support files to get to the macOS version you need to boot into.

Loder recommends a full backup prior to starting, including the following locations that you’ll want to move back when finished:

  • Applications
  • Library
  • The currently logged in user folder (~)
  • Preferences
  • Application Support
  • Fonts
  • Hidden config files
  • Also, keep a note of the Downloads and Documents folders inside your user folder. You’ll also need to backup any files located there before you reinstall.

The process isn’t always easy, but Loder’s guide makes it worthwhile, it’s a good read, and arguably worth bookmarking in a pinch. Take a gander and please let us know if you come across any useful guides on your end.
