AirPods Developer Hardware iOS Rumor

iOS 12 developer beta 5 features images of next-gen AirPods charging case, complete with LED status light

Sometimes it’s the beta builds that offer the coolest hints as to what Apple products are en route.

With the release of iOS 12 developer beta 5, a screenshot was discovered of the upcoming AirPods charging case. The new case features an LED displaying an amber light, meaning the device is currently charging or low on power while the other one shows the case with its LED displaying a green light, indicating that the AirPods case is sufficiently charged.

The new AirPods have the model identifier AirPods1,2 (the current model is AirPods1,1). It’s unknown as to whether Apple will ship new AirPods with the new case, give users the option before purchasing, or simply sell it as a separate add-on. The new charging case will be sold separately for those who already have the original AirPods and AirPods case.

Apple’s AirPower charging mat was originally announced last September with a shipping date of 2018. Since then, users have been waiting for the charging mat to ship. Rumors suggest that AirPower has run into unexpected delays during development.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
