iOS 14.5 developer beta 4 hints at separate updates for system and security in the future

Apple could be looking to release iOS system and security updates separately.

Per a series of code references found in the fourth iOS 14.5 developer beta, the company could be planning on a way to separate security updates from regular software updates. The company already does this with macOS, and iPhone and iPad users could see this happen, too.

The updates could be distinctly marked, and when users navigate to Settings > General > Software Update, they could see two toggles, one for system updates and the other for security updates.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
