Los Angeles COVID-19 vaccine recipients will be eligible to receive a digital record stored in their Apple Wallet app

This is interesting, and it could be a sign of things in the months ahead.

Residents in Los Angeles who receive a COVID-19 vaccine will also receive a digital record they can add to Wallet on iOS.

The record will ensure that vaccine recipients can get the second shot of the two-shot vaccine regimen. This is also a way for people to verify that they were vaccinated and could help them gain access to public venues should such a record become required. The record is being provided starting this week with a partnership with startup Healthvana.

Per the Bloomberg article:

Jarashow acknowledged issues around granting a company access to residents’ protected health information, but said that they had worked through them. Healthvana stores the data on Amazon Web Services’ HIPAA-compliant servers, according to Bastani.

“It’s as safe as we can make it,” Jarashow said. “Personally I would feel comfortable using it, so I hope that’s reassuring.”

While this is a relatively new function, records have been added to the Apple Wallet app since Apple added support for medical records to be stored in its encrypted Health app with iOS 11.3.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
