Rumor: Second-gen iPhone X could be priced at $899 for 5.8-inch version, $999 for 6.8-inch “Plus” version

The second-gen version of the iPhone X, or at least a 5.8-inch version of it, could be priced at $899, $100 cheaper than the current 5.8-inch iPhone X unit. It’s also thought that the $999 price tag could accompany a new 6.5-inch version of the device.

The company has had “limited success” trying to pitch the iPhone X at $999, RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani argued in recently released investor memo. Making its follow-up cheaper would lower Apple’s average selling price but might compensate by increasing units sold, he said.

The memo states that Apple could release three new iPhones this year and agrees with the rumors that the first two models – the 5.8-inch and the 6.5-inch – will use OLED displays while the third version is expected to adopt a 6.1-inch LCD format.

Daryani, who cites anonymous sources, suggests that the LCD model will use aluminum edges, while the OLED ones will be equipped with “premium steel.”

It’s thought that the three models will use Face ID, thereby enabling smaller bezels by ditching the need for a home button, where Touch ID devices have their fingerprint sensor.

Apple is likely to announce its 2018 iPhone lineup in September, as usual. The company may start trial production as soon as next quarter, looking to avoid a repeat of the delays that forced the X to ship in November 2017. Reports have blamed that on the 3D-sensing TrueDepth camera, which is said to be difficult to make.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
