  • Apple adds live news feature to iOS 11.2.5, tvOS 11.2.5

    You can now access the news a bit easier through your iOS device or Apple TV.

    Apple has updated the prominent Watch Now section of the TV app to feature live news channels. iOS device users with iOS 11.2.5 and Apple TV users with tvOS 11.2.5 will see the change immediately.

    From the main screen, click the “Watch Now” tab, then screen down past the “Up Next” section to access the “What to Watch” recommendations. This list is dynamic, but it currently shows a row of TV shows and movies, then a PyeongChang 2018 row for Winter Olympics coverage. Below that is the new News row. Multiple channels are represented, with a red “Live” banner on the thumbnail image.

  • First iOS 11.3 developer beta out the door, offers improved power management, iCloud Messages, additional Animoji units, other changes

    Following Tuesday’s release of iOS 11.2.5, which brought HomePod support, Siri news, and a fix for the Messages text bomb, Apple has offered preview access to iOS 11.3, which will include assorted nifty new features, including a toggle for CPU throttling on phones old batteries.

    Following the iOS 11.3 update, Apple says users will now be able to see their overall battery health, and will recommend if it needs to be serviced. You will also be told if your battery is triggering a chip slowdown, and can choose to turn that feature off. The switch will only be available for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

  • HomePod receives FCC approval, appears ready to launch soon

    Apple’s HomePod just snagged FCC approval and is that much closer to launch.

    The smart speaker received approval on January 19th, which likely means a launch is imminent. Details on the filing include an image of the bottom of the smart speaker where the FCC label will be located.

    Interestingly, many of the FCC documents are dated September 27th, but have just now been released, which suggests that the hardware may not have changed much in the past months.
