Cyan releases remastered Myst Mobile game for iOS, iPadOS devices

Following up on Monday’s article about a 30th anniversary edition of Myst being developer for iOS and iPadOS devices, developer Cyan on Thursday released the remastered “Myst Mobile” game for the iPhone and iPad.

The game had been available via a prior version for iOS devices in 2009, but this is an updated version that is free to download and play.

The game can be played on any iOS or iPadOS device with an A12 chip or later, as well as an M1 or M2 chip. Cyan says that the game has been optimized for ‌M1‌ devices and runs supercharged on ‌M2‌ chips in particular, with graphics that rival console graphics. The game supports keyboards and trackpads, as well as gamepads.

The Myst Island content is available at no const, albeit if you’d like to unlock the Ages beyond Myst Island add-on, this is available for a one-time purchase of $14.99. There is a launch promotion right now that drops the price down to $9.99.

If you’ve had a chance to try the game, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

Myst in development for iOS/iPadOS port

Myst, the classic puzzle adventure game that may have driven you nuts back in 1993, is en route to your iPhone or iPad. Myst Mobile is based on the remastered version of the original that’s been released for Oculus headsets and PCs over the past few years as a 30th anniversary edition.

The iOS/iPadOS port will support iPhones and iPads with A12 Bionic chipsets and newer. Compatible iPhones include the XS, XS Max, XR, and newer; the eighth-gen iPad, third-gen iPad Air, and fifth-gen iPad Mini and newer will all be compatible, too.

The latest version will feature a revamp via the Unreal Engine, offering a more photorealistic look for the game’s graphics.

The new version will be free to download, and you can play through the game’s first location, Myst Island, for as long as you want without paying anything. To explore any of the other locations, you’ll need to pay the full $14.99 retail price.

Cyan, the game’s developer, has yet to provide an exact launch date for the title.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

  • Myst Comes to the iPhone and iPod Touch

Ah, the beautifully rendered scenes, the clever puzzles, and the creepy ambient sounds and music. If you’ve been a Mac user since the days of the beige cases, you probably remember all of these characteristics from playing the game Myst and its sequels, developed by Cyan which was founded by Rand and Robyn Miller.

The original Myst, released in 1993, sold over 12 million copies and held the title of best-selling computer game until The Sims was released in 2000. The game was partly responsible for the CD’s increase in popularity as it was the first game to be released exclusively on CD. The game made extensive use of Apple’s QuickTime technology for its gameplay, and all the environments were complete 3D modeled creations, which was rare for games at the time.

Now, the entire game has been reproduced in iPhone/iPod Touch format and is available in the App Store [app link]. The game has been updated to use multi-touch controls rather than the original point and click navigation. Otherwise your trip through the four Ages of Myst to solve its puzzles and unravel the mystery of Atrus and his “linking books” remains intact from the original.

Myst requires 1.5GB of free space to install, though it will reduce in size to 727MB or so once it’s finished installing. The game requires iPhone 2.2.1 software and is $5.99 in the App Store.
