  • Apple releases Safari 14.1 update for macOS Mojave, macOS Catalina, macOS Big Sur, iOS 14.5, and iPadOS 14.5 operating systems

Apple releases Safari 14.1 update for macOS Mojave, macOS Catalina, macOS Big Sur, iOS 14.5, and iPadOS 14.5 operating systems

Apple has released version 14.1 of its Safari web browser for the macOS Mojave, macOS Catalina, macOS Big Sur, iOS 14.5, and iPadOS 14.5 operating systems, and while there’s a fair number of under the hood changes, there are several improvements that are more noticeable to end users:

Date & Time Inputs for Mac – In HTML, the date, time, datetime-local attributes for the input element prompt the browser to create date and/or time controls — an interface that’s designed to let the user easily enter a time or a date, usually with a calendar.

Web Speech API – Now, Safari supports speech recognition powered by the same speech engine as Siri. That means web developers can enjoy the benefits of high-quality transcription for over 50 languages and dialects.

WebM Support – WebKit added improved support for WebM media. Initial support began in Safari 12.1 with support for VP8 in WebM in the context of WebRTC only. With Safari 14, WebKit added support for WebM via MSE. Now, WebKit supports WebM files containing VP8 or VP9 video tracks and Vorbis audio tracks.

Private Click Measurement – This release features Private Click Measurement – a proposed web standard that enables advertisers to measure the effectiveness of click-through ad campaigns in a privacy-preserving way. This new technology is part of a larger effort to remove cross-site tracking from the web and provide privacy-preserving alternatives where needed.

The updated browser can either be snagged through the operating system updates or on their own via the macOS, iOS, and iPadOS Software Update feature.

If you’ve had a chance to try out Safari 14.1, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

  • Rumor: “iPhone 13” could feature always-on display that would show persistent clock and battery icons

Rumor: “iPhone 13” could feature always-on display that would show persistent clock and battery icons

A new rumor has indicated that the next-gen iPhone/the “iPhone 13” could feature an always-on display that could potentially light up portions for a brief period to show notifications to the user, without illuminating the entire screen.

The upcoming devices, according to Max Weinbach of EverythingApplePro, the iPhone 13 could use an always on display that will allow the lock screen to show some important elements and notifications, but won’t necessarily fully illuminate in the same way as current models do.

The clock and battery icons will apparently always be visible on the screen, even if the screen is locked, and will do so regardless of the illuminated state of the rest of the display.

Notifications displayed on the lock screen could use “a bar and icons,” with it popping up normally on the display, though not all of the screen will light up.

“Instead, it will display it just like you’re used to right now, except dimmed down and only temporarily,” said Weinbach.

Weinbach sports a decent track record when it comes along to reporting leaks, and other rumors have hinted that the iPhone 13 could feature a 120Hz iPhone display, using LTPO technology to handle the variable clock speed of ProMotion. It would also be feasible for the technology to provide an always-on function, as it does for the Apple Watch by minimizing the refresh rate to save power.

It’s also rumored that the iPhone 13 could feature a four-camera array with LiDAR, a smaller or minimal notch at the front, a port-less design without Lightning, and the return of Touch ID.

  • Spigen AirTags accessory hints at possible AirTags release date, features

Spigen AirTags accessory hints at possible AirTags release date, features

Sometimes it’s the inadvertent accessory product launches that give things away.

A case accessory from Cyril, which is a sub-brand of Spine, has been listed online for pre-order, its shipping date of “late October” hinting at Apple’s anticipated AirTags product.

The listing also mentions that the product is “for AirTag,” is available in alternate colors, and is priced at $19.99

The product offers the following specifications:

    • Stylish and classy vegan leather strap case perfect accessory for minimalist
    • Firm button clasp keeps your AirTag securely
    • Hang your AirTag on your bag, key, wallets, clutches with stylish gold clip-on carabiner
    • Wireless charging compatible.
    • CYRILL Basic Leather strap case for Apple AirTag (2020)

The listing also mentions a wireless charging feature for AirTags, which falls in line with previous suggestions that AirTags may charge wirelessly or on the back of an iPhone, as opposed to using a replaceable CR2032 battery.

Finally, it’s thought that given the released product information, the AirTags will feature a slim disc-like design with a white front. The leather portion of the accessory also seems to be very similar to leaked images of an alleged Apple-designed AirTag keychain accessory from last year.

‌AirTags‌ are expected to work similarly to other item trackers such as Tile, allowing users to attach them to various items like cameras, wallets, keys, glasses, and more, to be able to locate them if they are misplaced. Rumors indicate ‌AirTags‌ will feature a built-in U1 ultra wideband chip for accurate indoor positioning information that will also allow for augmented reality-based tracking functionality.

Hints as to the forthcoming AirTags product have been present since markers were found in iOS 13’s beta code, which suggested a 2020 launch. Earlier this month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple will release ‌AirTags‌ at some point in 2021, though he did not provide more specific information.

  • iPhone 12 Pro delivery dates begin to slip, will now arrive in early November in some regions

There’s supply and demand, and they’re never exactly in perfect synch with each other.

Following Apple’s acceptance of pre-orders for its iPhone 12 Pro handsets, a number of estimated delivery dates have begun to move back around the world.

The delivery dates, which began at October 23, slipped back into November within three to four minutes of pre-orders being accepted, and some models and configurations saw delivery dates slipping back one and then two weeks. U.S. customers appear to have fared better, but worldwide it appears that Apple is already unable to keep up with initial demand on time.

U.S. customers seem to be in a more fortunate position, and it’s still possible to get the iPhone 12 delivered by October 23, assuming you order soon. There is also an option for collecting in-store and a random sampling of possible stores from New York to Los Angeles is showing the same October 23 date, as of October 16, 10:40 AM. ET

For France and Australia, the delivery date has slipped from October 23, and instead now lists the devices as available within five to seven working days, which means the date may actually have slipped to Monday 26.

Per the UK, the iPhone 12 is now available for delivery on November 2-9 at the earliest.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
