Rumor: Folding iPad Pro may have been pushed back to 2029 or later

If you’re hankering for the folding iPad, you may have to wait until 2029 or later.

According to a Tuesday report from Bloomberg, the folding iPad may have been pushed back to 2029 at the earliest. According to sources familiar with the device, Apple is working with Samsung Display to create the 18-inch display panel. As usual for Apple, and like the iPhone Fold, the project aims to minimize the chance of creases developing in the middle of the display. The sources have also stated that the large screen has become a complex issue to solve, and may have forced an extended delay in its development.

The folding iPad price may have also ballooned to approach $3,000, making it three times as expensive as the 13-inch iPad Pro. Engineers are also rumored to be worried about the weight ot the prototypes, which have gone up to 3.5 pounds, or the weight of a MacBook Pro, when the typical iPad Pro weighs in around one pound.

While the weight is an issue, it’s something that can certainly come down as development progresses. Sources say the current prototype is reminiscent of the Huawei MateBook Fold, an 18-inch folding tablet. The Huawei version allegedly weighs less than a pound, but comes in at a street price of about $3,400.

The rumors about a foldable iPad have circulated for quite some time. In part, this has been buoyed by patent filings by Apple for products that are fairly close in concept. The patents have mentioned a hinged OLED screen that could turn a large iPad into a MacBook, as well as a “keyless keyboard” for a dual-screened MacBook. Apple has even envisioned improving the design by using actuators to change the physical shape of a screen’s surface to raise “keys.”

Though Apple is seemingly having trouble with a large-screen folding iPad, it’s not the only foldable that it’s apparently having trouble with. On October 17, Apple was reportedly still working on designing the hinge for the iPhone Fold.

  • Rumor: MacBook with foldable display could be delayed to 2027, 2028

Rumor: MacBook with foldable display could be delayed to 2027, 2028

If you’re hankering for a futuristic MacBook with a folding screen, you might have to wait a while longer.

Three or four years, to be exact.

Per noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Juo, Apple’s rumored foldable notebook may not arrive until the end of 2027 or 2028 given current technical challenges.

Previous reports from display industry analysts have suggested that Apple is developing an all-display foldable laptop that will feature a 20.2-inch or an 18.8-inch screen.

When folded, the notebook was rumored to feature a full-size on-screen keyboard that integrated directly with the screen itself. When completely unfolded, the device was said to function as a standard monitor. Paired with an external keyboard, it essentially transforms into a large-screen desktop setup.

Kuo stated back in May that LG Display was looking to begin mass production of display panels for a MacBook with a 20.2-inch or an 18.8-inch foldable screen in the fourth quarter of 2025. Kuo recently posted on X/Twitter that Apple has canceled the 20-inch design and has now settled on a display size of 18.8 inches.

    Kuo’s post offered the following:

“Some market participants previously expected Apple to launch the foldable iPad in 2025. But the current supply chain survey indicates that the foldable ‌iPad‌ has no visibility. This may also be because some call this foldable MacBook a foldable ‌iPad‌.”

Apple has been experimenting with various devices with foldable displays, including a foldable iPad and MacBook. The MacBook is already foldable, but Apple has reportedly been exploring an all-display MacBook form factor that has no standard keyboard.

Display analyst Ross Young stated back in July 2022 that the computing industry could bring a notebook with a foldable screen to market in 2026 or 2027, although it remains unclear if the device would be classified as a Mac, an ‌‌iPad‌‌, or something in between.

  • Apple to send out class action payment checks to cover MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard settlements, repairs

Apple to send out class action payment checks to cover MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard settlements, repairs

If you lived through the nightmare of Apple’s butterfly keyboard prior to the company’s conversion to its own chips in 2020, you’ve got a payment coming.

Prior to the conversion to Apple Silicon chips and the current hardware, Apple’s butterfly keyboard was so bad that Apple issued a service program in 2018 that covered every model ever made and had to answer to a class action lawsuit that resulted in a $50 million settlement in early 2023. Now, those checks are finally starting to go out to affected customers.

Per the terms of the settlement, Apple distributed $33 million to users via the following three tiers:

Group 1 ($395): If you repaired your MacBook keyboard two or more times through Apple or an Authorized Service Provider within four years of purchase.

Group 2 ($125): If you repaired your MacBook keyboard once through Apple or an Authorized Service Provider within four years of purchase.

Group 3 ($50): If you repaired keycaps through Apple or an Authorized Service Provider.

Groups 2 and 3 were required to file a claim form to receive payment, while members of the first group would automatically be sent checks if they lived in California, New York, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington, or Michigan when they bought their MacBook.

In short, keep an eye on your mail, as Apple may be sending you a check for the repair.
