Rumor: Apple may have shelved its anticipated 27-inch mini LED display

If you were hoping for Apple’s rumored 27-inch display with mini LED backlighting to arrive in early 2023, Apple may have shelved the project.

Rumors circulated about a pro-level 27-inch display since the introduction of the Studio Display. As a screen that lacks HDR, ProMotion, and the improved mini LED backlighting as found in other Apple products, an upgrade was thought to be on the way.

Per a tweet released on Monday, by Display Supply Chain Consultants analyst Ross Young, Apple has “killed off the 27″ display completely.”

According to Young, Apple had made some progress with the panel, with some shipping to the supply chain in 2022, but they did not make it into a consumer-facing product at all. The display may still be used in a future product though, as Young offers that the pause is “at least for now.”

Young had previously advised of a 27-inch mini LED display launch for early 2023 as of October 2022. The previous tweet was shared to super followers on Twitter, making it visible only to paying members.

Apple already incorporates mini LED display technology into the displays of the 14-inch MacBook, the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. A replacement for traditional LED backlighting, mini LED enables for higher contrast levels close to those of OLED, localized dimming, and a generally more vibrant display.

If it ever ships, the 27-inch mini LED display stands to become the mini Pro Display XDR that rumor followers wanted.

  • Rumor: Apple working on new external displays with Apple Silicon processors, other new features

Rumor: Apple working on new external displays with Apple Silicon processors, other new features

Per Mark Gurman’s “Power On” newsletter over at Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to upgrade and possibly expand its lineup of external displays designed for Mac and iPad users. The new report, which came out Monday, states that Apple is working on “multiple new external monitors” with Apple Silicon inside, including a new version of the Pro Display XDR.

Apple currently sells two external monitors in the form of its Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR. The Studio Display was released earlier this year and starts at $1,599. The Pro Display XDR retail for $4,999 without a stand.

The updated Pro Display XDR is expected to be paired with the Apple Silicon-power Mac Pro. Gurman, however, stated that it’s possible the new Pro Display XDR might not be released until after the new Mac Pro/

It’s been rumored that Apple is developing a new external display with a 7K resolution. The current Pro Display XDR has a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. A 7K external display from Apple could have a higher pixel density of 245 PPI with a 32-inch screen, or it could keep the same 218 PPI as the Pro Display XDR but on a larger 36-inch panel.

It’s also been reported that each of the new external displays will feature AppleSIlicon chips inside so “the screens rely less on resources from the attached computer.” This shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, as the Studio Display features an A13 Bionic chip inside alongside an intriguing 64GB of storage.

  • Rumor: Apple developing 7K display for the creative professional market

Rumor: Apple developing 7K display for the creative professional market

Apple is thought to be working on a 7K display for the professional market.

The company, which is thought to be following up on its Pro Display XDR, which was introduced in 2019, and targeting the creative market, which includes professionals ranging from photographers to animators to video editing experts.

The sources familiar with the planned display couldn’t say whether the Apple Studio Display would be meant as a replacement for the Pro Display XDR or a fresh option.

The sources indicated that the new display would offer a 7K resolution. Currently, Apple’s Pro Display XDR has a 32-inch 6K (6016 x 3384) panel with 218 pixels per inch. The higher resolution on the Apple Studio Display could mean a higher pixel density or a larger panel.

If Apple continues to go with the 32-inch size for the Apple Studio Display, this would mean a pixel density of 245 PPI. Alternatively, Apple could bump the display to a larger 36-inch panel. Then, the display would keep the same 218 PPI pixel density as the Pro Display XDR.

As of 2021, reports indicated that Apple might be testing a new display that included a built-in A13 chip. Other reports hinted at Cupertino planning to introduce a new external display in 2022 at half the price of the current Pro Display XDR. If the Apple Studio Display hinted at is the model with the dedicated Apple Silicon chip, it seems unlikely to be a candidate for a lower price point.

Apple has previously offered multiple sizes of its “Cinema Display” in the past, and could be planning for the Apple Studio Display alongside smaller, less expensive versions of the Pro Display XDR for more casual users.

Exact technical specifications and launch dates are currently unknown, but we’ll have additional details as they become available.

  • Apple releases support document highlighting potential brightness issue for Liquid Retina XDR and Pro Display XDR in high temperatures

Apple releases support document highlighting potential brightness issue for Liquid Retina XDR and Pro Display XDR in high temperatures

Apple’s Liquid Retina XDR and Pro Display XDR displays are awesome, but they may come with temperature constraints.

Apple on Thursday shared a new support document explaining a warning symbol that could appear on the MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR Display or the Pro Display XDR when the screen is running too hot, leading to brightness being diminished.

The situation can occur if the ambient temperature of the room is high and if bright content has been playing for an extended period of time. Apple offer several solutions for those who see the warning, including lowering the temperature of the room and temporarily putting a Mac to sleep to allow it to cool.

Apple has offered the following suggestions as to how to avoid the issue:

On MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display, quit any apps that could be consuming significant system resources.

Use the Apple XDR Display or Pro Display XDR reference mode unless your current workflow requires a specific reference mode.

Lower the ambient temperature of the room.

Close or hide any windows with HDR content.

Choose Apple menu  > Sleep to put your Mac to sleep. Let your display cool down for 5-10 minutes, then press any key on the keyboard to wake your Mac.

Apple says that users who see this problem continually when the ambient temperature of the room is under 77 degrees Fahrenheit should contact Apple Support for help.

If you’ve seen this issue on your end, please let us know about your experience in the comments.

  • Rumor: Apple could release 27-inch Apple Silicon iMac with mini-LED display in first half of 2022

Rumor: Apple could release 27-inch Apple Silicon iMac with mini-LED display in first half of 2022

Per the rumor mill, an updated 27-inch iMac with Apple Silicon as well as a mini-LED display may be getting closer to release, as suppliers are said to be preparing small shipments of parts for the model.

Per a paywalled DigiTimes article clipped by Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young, suppliers are said to “start shipments” for a “27-inch iMac.”

The article goes on to state that suppliers have begun shipping parts for the model “in small volumes,” according to “industry sources.” While specific details were limited, it was mentioned that the desktop would include a mini-LED display.

It’s also thought that the display could include ProMotion, which arrived on the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro alongside mini LED. The use of the technology in the MacBook models strongly hints at Apple adding it to a future iMac.

Rumors have pointed to a launch of the updated iMac in the first half of 2022, with one source claiming that it might head out the door in October, complete with 16GB of Unified Memory, 512GB of storage in the base model, use the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, feature dark bezels around the display, and have a similar design to both the 24-inch iMac and the Pro Display XDR. Featuring a HDMI port, SD card slot, and Ethernet in the power brick, it is anticipated to be priced at or above $2,000 for the base model.

It’s also been suggested that the larger iMac could incorporate Face ID, as this has apparently been tested, though not “confirmed” by sources.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
