Display analyst Ross Young tweets out possible specs for Apple’s AR headset

Noted display analyst Ross Young has tweeted out some interesting details that may serve as specifications for Apple’s forthcoming AR headset, which is believed to be announced this week at WWDC.

Apple hasn’t announced any details of its first foray into Augmented Reality headsets, and won’t until at least WWDC. But any headset will feature two screens, one for each of the wearer’s eyes, and Young says he has the details.

“You want more, I will give you more,” begins his tweet as seen by AppleInsider. He goes on to list “Micro OLED specs for Apple’s AR/VR headset,” which are:

    • 1.41 inches diagonal
    • Targeting 4000:1 contrast
    • Targeting >5000 nits of brightness

Young’s tweet doesn’t clarify the exact meaning of the “targeting” term, and it’s unknown whether these specifications, if correct, are from earlier plans for the device.

The brightness level Young quotes will be a peak level so it’s not known what the level will be in regular use. For comparison, the Meta Quest 2 is reported to have 100 nits brightness on its single Fast Switch LCD screen.

Similarly, Sony’s Playstation VR2 has a stated brightness of 265 nits with its pair of OLED screens.

It’s been rumored that Apple will use micro OLED technology in either of its AR or VR headsets for some time, and it’s thought that Samsung Display will produce the screens.

  • Significant leak hints at forthcoming iPhone design shapes and features for the next several years

Significant leak hints at forthcoming iPhone design shapes and features for the next several years

This is why they pay server security personnel so well and why large companies flip out when product information is leaked years ahead of schedule.

A major leak has prompted analysts from DSCC to publish a paper detailing Apple’s iPhone roadmap for the upcoming years, including the technologies Apple will unveil from now on.

DSCC Ross Young noted that Apple was planning this new hole-punch + pill design for the iPhone 14 Pro, and the regular model would stick with the same notch design. Now, DSCC is betting on under-display sensors and Pro features, such as Always-On display and ProMotion, for all models in the future.

Should Apple’s plans adhere to what was leaked, here are the major design shapes and features to expect from the future iPhone Pro models:

    • 2023: Pill shape
    • 2024: Pill shape
    • 2025: Under panel Face ID + hole
    • 2026: Under panel Face ID: + hole
    • 2027: Under panel face ID + under panel camera

Apple is expected to keep a similar design to the iPhone 14 Pro until 2024. For the iPhone 17 Pro, the company will start adding the Face ID sensors under the panel, which will likely make Dynamic Island smaller.

Should the trend continue, the iPhone 18 Pro will function as an an all-screen smartphone with all sensors hidden behind the screen.

The features are thought to be as follows:

    • 2023: Pill shape without AOD and ProMotion
    • 2024: Pill shape without AOD and ProMotion
    • 2025: Pill shape with AOD and ProMotion
    • 2026: Pill shape with AOD and ProMotion
    • 2027: Under panel Face ID + hole with AOD and ProMotion

Given the leak, Apple will only add ProMotion and Always-On display technologies to the regular iPhone models in 2025 with the 17. Then, in 2027, Apple will finally integrate the Face ID sensor behind the display, and the iPhone Pro will feature a full-screen design.

  • Rumor: Apple may introduce 15.5-inch M2 MacBook Air in Q2 2023

Rumor: Apple may introduce 15.5-inch M2 MacBook Air in Q2 2023

The rumor mill has expanded on its claims of a forthcoming 15.5-inch MacBook Air that could ship in the second quarter of this year.

According to DigiTimes, industry sources have stated that the notebook is en route,

The report fits with display analyst Ross Young’s claim that the New MacBook Air will arrive in spring 2023. His claim is based on sources reporting that the display panels for the larger MacBook Air began production earlier in February.

The notion of the larger screen size has been the consistent element in the recent rumors, albeit opinions have varied over what processor the device will have. Some claim that an as-yet unannounced M3 will be used, based on how TSMC has begun production of a new 3-nanometer chip.

Still, it seems likely that if the notebook does ship in April, it will feature Apple’s M2 processor.

  • Rumor: Apple developing a 15.5-inch MacBook Air for release this year

Rumor: Apple developing a 15.5-inch MacBook Air for release this year

The rumor mill once again has it that Apple will be releasing a 15.5-inch MacBook Air notebook, the most current updates highlighting that the company has begun producing panels for the computer.

Display supply chain analyst Ross Young said in December that the larger MacBook Air would arrive in the spring of 2023. In a Tweet to Super Followers, he said on Monday that panel production for the larger MacBook Air started this month, with the product launching in April.

Rumors of a 15-inch MacBook Air have circulated since 2021, although not much is known aside from the unit’s screen size. It’s speculated that the notebook could feature the next generation of Apple Silicon — such as an M3 chip — and Apple supplier TSMC started mass production of a 3-nanometer chip process in late December.

It’s also thought that the unit could receive a MagSafe 3 connector for charging, as opposed to continuing the tradition of charging through a USB-C port.

Details on a future 15-inch MacBook Air have also been leaked by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo believes that wouldn’t go into production until late 2023 and would be called a MacBook instead of a MacBook Air.

  • Analysts highlight 2024 as the year in which Apple could release an OLED MacBook

Analysts highlight 2024 as the year in which Apple could release an OLED MacBook

Noted analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Ross Young have recently doubled down on 2024 as the year in which Apple will release its first OLED MacBook.

The prediction comes as a bit of a surprise, although Kuo has qualified it by saying that “by the end of 2024 at the earliest” …

Apple first adopted OLED technology in its Apple Watch before bringing it to the iPhone, starting with the iPhone X. The company has not yet used this in either iPads or MacBooks, but is expected to do so sometime in the 2023-2026 timeframe. With MacBooks, 2024 has been suggested as the most likely date.

Last summer, display analyst Ross Young said it was “looking increasingly likely” that Apple would release a MacBook with an OLED display sometime in 2024.

Ross stated that OLED technology would likely appear on a 13-inch notebook model that would most likely to be a MacBook Air, but might instead be a MacBook Pro – or even a new plain MacBook. Just a month ago, Young indicated that this plan was still on track.

Per a tweet from Ming-Chi Kuo on Tuesday, the OLED implementation is not a done deal. Kuo stated that Apple will also launch OLED MacBook before the end of 2024 at the earliest. This is expected that driven by Apple, the growth rate of OLED notebook computers is expected to maintain rapid growth in the next few years.

OLEDs in notebooks have the advantage of being thin, light, and offering more diverse form factor design options, such as folding.
