  • Leaked macOS 10.14 video hints at Dark Mode, News App, other forthcoming changes

    Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has unearthed and leaked a video from Apple’s web servers that appears to show Xcode 10 running on macOS 10.14.

    Troughton-Smith said he found the 30-second clip buried within an API on the backend of the Mac App Store.

    Xcode 10 features a new dark interface alongside a darker Trash icon in the Dock. In macOS 10.13, there is a partial dark mode, but only for the dock and top menu bar.

  • Rumor: Next-gen Apple TV could feature A10X Fusion processor, 3GB of RAM

    It looks like there’s a good chance the next-gen Apple TV will also use an A10X Fusion processor.

    Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has been analyzing the firmware files and has discovered signs that the new unit, set to be unveiled officially by Apple tomorrow, will use the A10X along with 3GB of RAM. This represents a big increase in power and may signal a larger direction beyond 4K movies and TV shows.

    The upgrade could significantly increase computing power as well as graphics performance.

  • Updated HomePod firmware hints at facial recognition for next-gen iPhone

    It turns out that the newest HomePod firmware update dropped some hints as to what to expect with the next-gen iPhone.

    The firmware, which will run a version of iOS, corresponds to iOS 11.0.2.

    Developer Steven Troughton-Smith dug into the firmware and its BiometricKit framework that is currently home to Touch ID authentication, supporting claims that the iPhone 8 will rely at least in part on facial recognition.

    Within BiometricKit are new “FaceDetect” methods addressing such circumstances as faces being too close or too far from the camera, the presence of multiple faces, and more.

  • Uncovered iOS 10.3 beta code hints at floating one-handed keyboard feature in the works for iPad owners

    This could lead to something interesting.

    Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has uncovered chunks of code inside the new iOS 10.3 beta that seems to support a floating one-handed keyboard.

    According to Smith, the feature is supported in iPads that are 9.7-inches in size or smaller, meaning the largest 12.9-inch model is left out. Smith explains that the floating keyboard works a lot like picture-in-picture does for video. The keyboard can be moved around on-screen and is essentially the size of the keyboard you’d get on the iPhone.

  • Apple uses ARM T1 processor to drive Touch Bar functions in 2016 MacBook Pro

    There’s some cool stuff inside the new 2016 MacBook Pro.

    The new 13-inch and 15-inch Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro notebooks feature both an Intel processor and an Apple-designer T1 chip, which is also found inside the new Series 2 Apple Watch.

    As noted by Apple in its keynote, the T1 processor handles security for the Touch ID sensor, but it also performs a variety of other tasks. It secures the camera, the keychain which stores your passwords and the Touch Bar.
