  • Apple releases macOS 10.14.1 Supplemental Update for 2018 MacBook Air notebooks

    If you just snagged a 2018 MacBook Air, this could come in handy.

    Apple on Thursday released its macOS 10.14.1 Mojave Supplemental Update for the 2018 MacBook Air.

    The code makes unspecified “stability and reliability” fixes for Airs running macOS 10.14.1. It’s available as a direct download from Apple’s website, or throught the Updates tab in the Mac App Store.

  • Apple announces updated 13-inch MacBook Air with Retina display, Thunderbolt 3 ports, reworked trackpad, other features

    Over at the Brooklyn media event, Apple announced its new 2018 MacBook Air, complete with a Retina display, Thunderbolt 3, a redesigned trackpad and other new features.

    The notebook now arrives in three finishes, and incorporates a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports on the left side and a headphone jack on the right side.

    The updated MacBook Air now offers four times the resolution of the previous MacBook Air. As such, the new design has ditched the aluminum bezels surrounding the old display, leading the display much closer to the edge.

  • Intel unveils Whiskey Lake, Amber Lake processors, units could be used for updated MacBook notebooks this fall

    Intel’s spiffy new Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake processors for notebooks are officially available and should start surfacing in new systems this fall. The processors offer longer battery life, improved performance and built-in Gigabit WiFi support, and could be optimal for Apple’s upcoming MacBook and MacBook Air lineup.

    Both processors stick with the 14nm process Intel is using for the Kaby Lake processors we’re seeing in Macs now. That means no 10nm chips from Intel for a while longer, and not in any Mac this year and maybe even next year.

    Intel has stated that the new chips are twice as fast compared to a five-year-old PC, albeit the company has yet to offer comparisons to the current Kaby Lake processors.

  • T2 processor found within iMac Pro, 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro could be causing kernel panics for some Mac owners

    This might call for a firmware update.

    A number of iMac Pro and MacBook Pro users have reported macOS kernel panics, learning investigators to begin suspecting Apple’s T2 security chips.

    Threads in Apple’s support forums discuss issues with the iMac Pro, and more recently the 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro. All describe how the Mac crashes, entering a kernel panic and requiring it to be restarted, or in some cases rebooting itself automatically.

  • Apple releases details on Intel’s JHL7540 Thunderbolt 3 controller found on the 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro

    Last week, the rather cool cats at iFixit ran a complete teardown of the 2018 Touch Bar MacBook Pro. The analysis located Intel’s new JHL7540 Thunderbolt 3 controller, introduced earlier this year as part of its “Titan Ridge” family among the notebooks components.

    While the specifications for the JHL7540 lists compatibility with DisplayPort 1.4 on Intel’s product database, this also relies on graphics, which vary by MacBook Pro model.
