Apple to include “Find My AirPods” app in iOS 10.3

With iOS 10.3, it’ll be easy to find your lost AirPod wireless headphones.

Apple is apparently working on an app in iOS 10.3 that can hone in on your AirPods’ wireless Bluetooth signal, provided it’s within range of an iOS device connected to an iCloud account. Like the Find My iPhone app, users will be able to tap “Play Sound” and both of your AirPods will begin to chirp.

If one is in your ear, the app gives you controls to mute the right or left earbud. If someone has borrowed your AirPods and that’s why they’re missing, the sound won’t pierce their ear drums, but the volume will gradually increase, so they’ll have to surrender the AirPods.

If you’re hankering for a pair of AirPods but supplies have been out of stock, things might be about to change for the better.

Apple supplier Inventec, who appears to be the sole provider of Apple’s AirPods at this time, has started expanding capacity at its plants to satisfy worldwide demand for the wireless devices.

A current report via the Economic Daily New indicates that Inventec has brought on extra shifts and is expanding manufacturing capacity and working hours for assembly staff building the device.

Apple’s AirPods have roared out the door and are getting good reviews, but there may be some battery issues to contend with for some users.

A number of users have reported that the charging case that comes with the headphones isn’t holding Apple’s advertised 24 hours of charge. In theory, the charging case should only lose noticeable amounts of charge when the AirPods are low on battery and recharging within the case, and when users flip the pack open to check battery levels or otherwise activate Bluetooth with a connected Apple device.

Users who’ve reported issues have stated that the AirPods case drains more than 40 percent of available capacity in only a few hours, with the AirPods at 100 percent inside and minimal Bluetooth activation.

The cool cats at iFixit have just published their full teardown of Apple’s new wireless AirPods along with the charging kit that arrives with the unit. Through the teardown, iFixit cites a multitude of closely knit components within the AirPods, along with a few “quality issues” within the charging case that may be the reason for the months-long delay of the wireless headphones.

The teardown began by separating the speaker portion of the AirPod from the rest of the device, uncovering a miniature coaxial cable and two IR proximity sensors, which allow the AirPods to detect whenever they’re inside an ear, and play/pause music accordingly.

iFixit cited a “waterfall of glue” inside the base of the AirPod that essentially surrounds the charging point for the unit.

The current rumor has it that Apple will begin selling the long-awaited AirPods wireless headphones in its retail locations starting Monday, December 19th.

An anonymous retail source has offered this information and has stated that Apple is currently informing stores about the imminent launch and shipping product to retail locations.

Apple previously announced that AirPods would be in stores this coming week, but did not give specific information on when the in-store launch would take place. In addition to retail stores, carrier stores and Apple Authorized Resellers will also be receiving stock.

And that’s $69.

The good news is that the long-awaited AirPods will begin selling next week.

The bad news is that there’s currently about a two to four week delay to get them.

Apple announced that the wireless headphones will be available for purchase at Apple Stores, authorized resellers, and select carriers next week, providing customers who did not quickly pre-order with a chance to buy the wireless earphones before the end of the year. Apple said stores will receive “regular AirPods shipments.”

Rumor: AirPod delay might be attributed to technical/channeling issue, other causes

There may be a specific reason for the delay of the AirPods wireless earphones.

The AirPods, which were slated to launch in December and delayed with Apple stating it needed “a little more time”, were left without a specific reason for the delay.

A source close to the story has told the Wall Street Journal that the trouble appears to stem from Apple’s effort to chart a new path for wireless headphones. In most other wireless headphones, only one earpiece receives a signal from the phone via wireless Bluetooth technology; it then transmits the signal to the other earpiece.

This one’s from the big man himself.

As many customers anxiously await the release of Apple’s wireless AirPods, which were originally slated to launch in October but later delayed, an email from CEO Tim Cook to a customer may provide the most insight as to when to expect the product.

The customer offered the following comment in his email to Cook:

“Give us a release date. I really bought in to the wireless vision you painted. Now I’m stuck waiting with my EarPods but can’t charge my 7 at the same time which I need to do at work. Let us know if it’s a month or 6 months, because then I’ll just buy some other wireless headphones.”

It looks like the AirPods are about to hit the production line.

Following the delayed launch of the new wireless headphones in late October, Apple said it needed “a little more time” before they are ready for customers.

The latest word comes from investment bank Barclays, which in a research note we saw said AirPods should enter production in December. That means AirPods could still feasibly be released in time for the final weeks of the holiday shopping season, although a January 2017 launch as previously rumored, or later, is possible.
