Microsoft Updates IntelliPoint, IntelliType Drivers

On Saturday, Microsoft released version 6.2 of their drivers for their IntelliType keyboards and IntelliType mice. The drivers, a 6.9 megabyte download (courtesy of VersionTracker).
The new version enables features such as button and keyboard customization as well as access to battery status and requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later to run. The drivers are programmed as a Universal Binary and function at native speeds on both PowerPC and Intel-based hardware.
So far the update’s gone smoothly on this end, but if you’ve tried the new version and had a memorable user experience (either positive or negative), let us know.

Retrospect 6 Driver Update 6.1.10.100 Released

It may be minor on some level, but if you’ve forgotten to back your files up and a hard drive goes south, there’s only so much complaining your friends and family will put up with after the fact. On Thursday, Dantz released Retrospect 6 Driver Update 6.1.10.100, a maintenance update for its Retrospect 6 backup software that fixes bugs and adds support for the following devices:
-Buffalo Link Station Pro
-Dell PowerVault TL2000
-Dell PowerVault TL4000
-HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader
-Imation Odyssey
-Qualstar RLS-8204
-Qualstar RLS-8404
-Qualstar RLS-8216
-Tandberg RDX QuikStor USB
The update is a 2.2 megabyte download and requires Retrospect 6 or later and Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run.

BBEdit Updated to 8.6.2

On Thursday, Bare Bones Software released version 8.6.2 of BBEdit, its popular text and HTML editor. The update, which is free for registered users (the software retails for US$125 and crossgrade and update discounts are available according to Macworld News. The new version, a 14.3 megabyte download, features the following fixes and improvements:
-Fixed bug in which certain Control-key combinations could end up being inserted into the editing window when used as menu command equivalents.
-Fixed bug in which the Java function scanner didn’t correctly handle backslash escapes in strings.
-Fixed bug in which temporary files created for diffs (cvs, p4, subversion) were prematurely removed when multiple diff operations were running.
-Fixed a class of bug in the CSS margin/padding/border editors in which for given inputs they would incorrectly populate the editor dialog and/or generate incorrect CSS when applying the values. (This was most apparent when the rule set specified properties/values for a single side of the box.)

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 Out the Door

Mozilla.org, creators of the Firefox web browser, has just released version 2.0 of Thunderbird, its free e-mail client. The new program, a 19.2 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and new features:
-The ability to customize your toolbars the way you want them. Choose View / Toolbars / Customize inside any window.
-UI extensions can be added to Mozilla Thunderbird to customize your experiene with specific features and enchancements that you need. Support for extensions. Extensions allow you to add features particular to your needs such as offline mail support.
-A new look and feel. Thunderbird also supports a large number of downloadable themes which alter the appearance of the client.
-An addressing sidebar for mail compose which makes it easy and convient to add address book contacts to emails.
-Online help includes a FAQ, tips and tricks and other useful information.
-Simplified preferences UI and menus.
-Footprint and performance improvements.
-Message Tags: Create your own tags for organizing email. Messages can be assigned any number of tags. Tags can be combined with saved searches and mail views to make it easier to organize email.
-Visual Theme: Thunderbird 2′s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability and maximize screen real estate.
-Session History Navigation: Back and Forward buttons allow navigation through message history.
-Advanced Folder Views: Customize the folder pane to show favorite, unread or recent folders.
-Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services: Gmail and .Mac users can access their accounts in Thunderbird by simply providing their user names and passwords.
-Improved Support For Extensions: Extensions can now add custom columns to the message list pane in addition to storing custom message data in the mail database.
-Improved New Mail Notification Alerts: New mail alerts include information such as the subject, sender and message preview text.
-Folder Summary Popups: Mouse over a folder with new messages to see a summary of the new messages in that folder.
-Saved Search Folder Performance: Search results for saved search folders are now cached, improving folder loading performance.
-Find As You Type: Finds and highlights message text as you type.
-Improved Filing Tools: Recent folder menu items for moving and copying messages to recently used folders. Move / Copy again functionality.
-Updates to the Extension System: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
Thunderbird 2.0 requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later to run and is programmed as a Universal Binary, allowing for native speeds on both PowerPC and Intel-based hardware.

VLC Media Player Updated to 0.8.6b

VLC, the open source media player client, has received another update, pushing the version up to 0.8.6b. The new version, which measures between 13 and 23 megabytes depending on the specific client chosen for download, offers the following bug fixes and feature improvements:
Notable bug fixes:
-Improvements to out-of-bound read in demuxers.
-Demuxers crashes (incl. CVE-2007-0256).
-Mac OS X interface crashes.
-VP31 decoding on Windows platforms.
-Direct3D Video Output modifications for Vista compatibility.
-Correct behavior for feeding streams to Icecast or Shoutcast servers.
-Enhanced Flash Video support incl. VP61 and VP60.
-Teletext subtitles (telx) support.
-Rectified web browser plug-in behaviour and improved usability.
Mac OS X Interface & Port:

John Starmer Releases MightyMonitor Widget

Falling somewhere between the categories of “pretty neat idea” and “hey, that could be really useful”, developer John Starmer has released the MightyMonitor widget, a small widget application that displays the battery status of Apple’s wireless keyboard as well as its mighty mouse.
The readout displays remaining battery life as a percentage while the stop light-esque status readout warns the user that less than 25% of original battery life remains if the light is yellow and less than 10% remains if the light turns red.
MightyMonitor is available as a 412 kilobyte download through MacUpdate and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run.

BriteMac Introduces VM2Go Utility

As virtual machines have become more popular, software for managing them begins to become necessary. Responding to this, BriteMac has released VM2Go, a shareware utility that allows users of the best-selling Parallels Desktop for Mac to easily load and maintain the individual virtual machine profiles they’ve created with the program. Virtual machines can then be transferred to an external drive such as an iPod, DVD or thumb drive.
VM2Go is available for a US$14.95 shareware registration fee and is a 1.5 megabyte download for free, although will require registration after being run 20 times according to Macworld News.

The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.0.2 Released

On Thursday, Mark/Space announced that it had released The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile 3.0.2. The update, a 28.1 megabyte download, serves as a free upgrade for registered users and runs US$39.95 for new users to purchase and download or US$49.95 to have a CD-ROM shipped along.
The new version of the software, which enables Macs to go beyond communication services provided through Mac OS X and iSync, allows for synching with Windows Mobile devices. Data such as contacts, calendars, addresses, notes, iTunes content and iPhoto pictures can be transferred back and forth via this program. Version 3.0.2 serves as a maintenance update and removes the need for the device to be running in “flight mode” prior to connecting to the Mac according to Macworld News. This update also provides support for the Orange 3100 and HP RX 19XX series devices.
The Missing Sync for Windows Mobile requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later and a G4, G5 or Intel-based processor to run.

Skype 2.6 for Mac Beta Hits, Adds Call Transfer Feature

Skype has just announced a public beta of its 2.6 version for the Mac OS X platform. The new version, a 29.6 megabyte download, adds the following new features:
-User reminders and notifications for events such as appointments.
-Call Transfer feature to bounce a call over to current Skype contacts.
-Public chats can now be joined.
-Chat typing indicator to see when others are writing messages
-Skype Prime services access.
-Automatic Update now allows client to upate without having to visit a web site to download a new version.
-DTMF tones for automatic answering services available also during Skype-to-Skype calls.
Skype 2.6 requires an 800 MHz G4, G5 or Intel processor, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, 512 megabytes of RAM, 40 megabyes of free hard disk space and a microphone to run. The software is a universal binary and runs at native speeds on both the PowerPC and Intel-based hardware architectures.

Opera Browser Hits Version 9.2

On Wednesday, Opera Software released version 9.2 of its free web browser.
The new version, an 11.2 megabyte download, incorporates new features such as Speed Dial (a means of accessing favorite web sites in newly opened ab windows, then clicking on a site thumbnail to open a web site) as well as integrated BitTorrent support, content filtering, Widget support, a fraud protection scheme, IRC support and support for multiple search engines according to Macworld News.
Opera is programmed as a universal binary and runs at native speeds on both the PowerPC and Intel hardware architectures. The browser requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later to run.
