Apple, Google to add railroad crossing data to map programs following fatal 2015 accident

Apple Maps will soon begin including railroad crossing data.

Following up on an accident last year in which Google Maps users Jose Alejandro Sanchez-Ramirez turned a Ford truck, hauling a trailer, where he thought the app was telling him to go, but wound up stuck on the railroad tracks at a poorly marked California crossing. After abandoning his vehicle, he and the engineer died after a commuter train barreled into the truck, a commuter train barreled into it, the accident also injuring 32 others.

Following a nearly two-year long investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board is calling on companies such as Apple and Google to add the exact location of 200,000 grade crossings to their mapping data…

Leaked internal Tim Cook memo hints at additional desktops in Apple’s roadmap

Sometimes the internal leaked documents offer a pretty interesting look ahead.

In an internal post leaked to an employee message board, Apple CEO Tim Cook assured employees that the company is still committed to the Mac and that “great desktops” are coming. Apple’s desktop computers haven’t seen an upgrade in at least 433 days.

Rumor: Apple to begin selling AirPods in its Apple Store retail locations on Monday, December 19th

The current rumor has it that Apple will begin selling the long-awaited AirPods wireless headphones in its retail locations starting Monday, December 19th.

An anonymous retail source has offered this information and has stated that Apple is currently informing stores about the imminent launch and shipping product to retail locations.

Apple previously announced that AirPods would be in stores this coming week, but did not give specific information on when the in-store launch would take place. In addition to retail stores, carrier stores and Apple Authorized Resellers will also be receiving stock.

Apple releases AirPods pricing/warranty details, cites $69 replacement cost for individual lost AirPod headphone

There’s now an exact value as to how much replacing a lost AirPod will be.

And that’s $69.

Apple’s AirPods, which recently went on sale for $159, are completely wireless. As such, the risk of losing one grows. With that in mind, Apple has stated that it’s $69 to replace a lost AirPod earphone, whether your warranty is valid or not.

Super Mario Run reviews begin to emerge, cite strong gameplay, good first step for Nintendo on new platforms

At long last, Super Mario Run from Nintendo has emerged for iOS and Android and the reviews are starting to come in.

And they’re pretty good, if not stellar.

Over at Gamespot, the game received a 7 out of 10 with reviewer Peter Brown citing the game’s polish, smooth controls and movement options that feel immersive but not limiting.

Yahoo discloses details of August 2013 hack, says more than one billion accounts compromised in effort

It doesn’t look good when half a billion of your company’s email accounts are hacked.

And it looks a bit worse when a cool billion of them in total were hacked.

Yahoo on Wednesday announced that it believes more than one billion Yahoo user accounts were compromised in a hack by an unauthorized third party in August of 2013.

The company disclosed that information stolen from affected accounts includes names, email addresses, telephone numbers, birth dates, hashed passwords, and both encrypted and unencrypted security questions and answers. Clear text passwords, bank account information, and credit/debit card information were not believed to be accessed in the attack.

Amazon App released for tvOS, allows browsing, purchases via Apple TV

It’s now easy to buy products from Amazon on your Apple TV.

Amazon on Wednesday released a shopping app for any Apple TV running tvOS. The app allows users to purchase products via their Apple TV.

Upon downloading it, you’ll be given a code and asked to head to Amazon’s website on your phone or computer to sign in. From there, the app will ask you to create a four-digit pin number for completing purchases.

Apple releases macOS Sierra 10.12.2 update

The updates continue.

Apple on Tuesday issued macOS Sierra 10.12.2, the latest version of macOS.

The update, which weighs in at over one gigabyte when downloaded from the App Store, offers the following fixes and changes along with general fixes to stability and security:

– Improves setup and reliability of Auto Unlock.

– Allows addition of a Chinese Trackpad Handwriting button to the Touch Bar Control Strip.

– Adds support for taking screenshots of the Touch Bar using the Grab app or Cmd-Shift-6 shortcut.

– Fixes an issue that caused the Touch Bar emoji picker to appear on the display.

– Resolves graphics issues on MacBook Pro (October 2016) computers.

Apple announces launch of AirPods, initial units see delivery delays up to four weeks

The good news is that the long-awaited AirPods will begin selling next week.

The bad news is that there’s currently about a two to four week delay to get them.

Apple announced that the wireless headphones will be available for purchase at Apple Stores, authorized resellers, and select carriers next week, providing customers who did not quickly pre-order with a chance to buy the wireless earphones before the end of the year. Apple said stores will receive “regular AirPods shipments.”
