  • LG UltraFine 5K monitors experiencing errors within two meters of wireless routers

Well, this is kind of a mess.

LG’s UltraFine 5K monitor, which has become something of a spiritual successor to Apple’s Thunderbolt display and began shipping out from the Apple online store this week, appears to be suffering from a major fault wherein it will begin flickering when places within two meters (6.5 feet) of a wireless router. Once the flickering has begun, the monitor will go black and become unusable.

An LG Electronics support person confirmed the issue, saying it “only happens for the 5K monitors we have, not other LG monitors.”

It’s also been noted that, if plugged into a MacBook Pro, the failure can lead to being forced to reboot the notebook to bring it back. The failure does not occur when the monitor is out of a two meter range of a wireless router.

When Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo releases a research note, people tend to listen.

A new note states that Apple plans to introduce a dramatically overhauled MacBook Pro later this year. Kuo says the device will have a new “thinner and lighter” design with design cues taken from the 12-inch MacBook, as well as Touch ID support and a new OLED display touch bar above the keyboard.

The changes are expected to hit both the 13-inch and 15-inch models, which are set to debut during the fourth quarter of 2016.

  • Rumor: Apple looking to Amphenol for thinner, metal injection mold-made hinges for next-gen MacBook

    applelogo1

Following up on a rumor from November that Apple was working with suppliers to “fully redesign” many of the MacBook’s internal components to achieve a slimmer design, it appears that Apple might be making a move towards metal injection mold-made hinges.

Metal injection molding is a metalworking process that’s used to create very small metal pieces that are typically used by Apple for the internals of products like iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple is apparently looking to use the technology for its MacBook hinges to save space and achieve an “ultra-thin” design on its next generation of notebooks.

  • Rumor: Apple working on “ultra-thin” 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air notebooks for second quarter

It wasn’t mentioned in the press event yesterday, but Apple may have some “ultra-thin” 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air notebooks en route.

According to the sometimes-very-accurate DigiTimes, Apple may have the new notebooks ready for the end of the second quarter.

The second calendar quarter ends on June 30, meaning that new Macs could feasibly be introduced by WWDC 2016, which will likely take place between June 13-17 based on scheduling information available from the Moscone Center.

  • Thunderbolt 3 specification announced, will be housed within USB-C cabling

    usb-c-thunderbolt.0

The Thunderbolt 3 specification has been announced by Intel.

And it’ll be housed within the new USB-C cabling.

The next generation of the high-speed Thunderbolt specification was announced on Tuesday, effectively replacing the legacy Mini DisplayPort connector for the new smaller, reversible USB-C standard, and offering transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps with high-end cables.

Thunderbolt 3 will be a “superset” for USB 3.1, which runs at 10Gbps. Using a standard USB-C cable, Thunderbolt 3 will offer transfer speeds of twice that, at 20Gbps.
